J.AX Posted August 24, 2008 Posted August 24, 2008 Hello everyone I'm a noobie with a very old and very special Citroen. And not unlike many of the adults today I would like to know where it came from and why it all started. This has proved difficult to say the least. I own a 1990 Citroen AX Convertible. Coach built 18 years ago and not regognised by Citroen themselves. All ive been able to find out is the Citroen made a space age concept AX Cabriolet which now sits in their warehouse in France. A coachworks in the UK did purchase 12 brand new Citroen AX's to convert them to cabriolet but there is no record if the cabs were ever built. I've hunted down only 3 other AX Convertibles in the country and no 2 are built the same. I'm very good friends with the previous owner of the AX but he only had it for 3 years and knows nothing any history. The DVLA are useless at the best of times and everything is confidential. Does anyone have any other ideas on who to contact or where would be a good place to look. I even tried Citroen and they told me the car i drove there in, doesn't exist!!! Here's a picture of how she sits now: http://www.ryanmt.com/media/pictures/AXcabside_medium.jpg Quote
Guest Colin Hunter Posted August 24, 2008 Posted August 24, 2008 Hi There. Although your car is too young to be a "Classic" it is definitely unusual and is undoubtedly a "Future Classic". Such magazines as Practical Classics and Classics Monthly are probably the best starting point to find the history of your very unusual and attractive little car. The staff on these mags are very knowledgable about such things and I would be very surprised if they don't know its origin. If you don't already read these Mags you're in for a bit of a treat as there are many such unusual and sometimes unique cars among their pages. Cheers. Hope you get to the bottom of it! ;) Quote
J.AX Posted August 25, 2008 Author Posted August 25, 2008 Cool, i hadn't even thought of that but now it seems obvious. I agree totally that i'm sure many classic car owners want to know where it all started. At least be able to point me in the right direction. I've been very lucky in owning this car, and AX be it but when I first decided I wanted a convertible one the initial was more a wish - 'i wish Citroen made a cabriolet version of this.' Flyly befriending an owner of one who lives only an 8 hour drive away from me I put down my first dibs. I've owned 6 AX's in my short lifetime including the Forte, GT and GTi but this has been the best by far. Before getting this pre-built custom i lost patience and purchased a 1.1 Forte to build one of my very own. The project took so long that I bought the pre-build and sold the project on. I know my story, and i know Chris' story (he is the previous owner) but I can't help but feel there is so much more that the car just can't tell me. I'm not sad and lonely, I promise, just nostalgic and very sentimental when it comes to the little AX. Quote
Guest Colin Hunter Posted August 26, 2008 Posted August 26, 2008 Good! I'm certain that if you send details (with pics)of your car to either mag they will fall over themselves to help you. I remember test driving an AX 1.4 GTi many years ago and, although it was a little smaller than I was used to, it was a real HOOT! It reminded me of souped up minis (REAL ones, NOT that poofy BMW usurper, Even if they do now at least have decent [Citroen] engines!) from times gone by. Roller skate type "Point & Squirt" type fun and go-kart type cornering! Magic!! Just a pity I couldn't fit in it properly! It went like STINK too! I'm in my 50's now and a bit more "sedate" but think with fondness of what might have been had I been a wee bit smaller! Enjoy your wee car, It's a GEM! :D Quote
techbod Posted August 26, 2008 Posted August 26, 2008 The Citroën AX BB Cabrio was a small roadster derived from the AX (1988). In Portugal, Citroen dealership Benjamin Barral created an unofficial convertible version, called the BB Cabrio, originally powered by the twin-carb AX GT 1.4 L engine, but later available with any type of engine that equipped the 3 door AX. Considered very handsome, due to the lack of the usual rollbar that convertible normally require, these cars are now collector´s items and command a heavy premium over the normal models they are based upon. since it has a roll bar its more likely a modded carthis link has the real makoy http://images.google.co.uk/imgres?imgurl=h...l%3Den%26sa%3DN http://images.google.co.uk/imgres?imgurl=h...%3D20%26hl%3Den Quote
J.AX Posted August 26, 2008 Author Posted August 26, 2008 woohoo u lot are well equipped arent you!!! Nev seen that BB cab before. Have seen one with the real fold back roof. Up close you can tell mine is a custom. Hmmm, might have to start searching urope for a real deal also......what can i say, im in love!!! I'd still like to trace my baby back to where and why she was built as per what Colin has been saying. Quote
techbod Posted August 27, 2008 Posted August 27, 2008 you would need the VIN number and number plate for DVLA and they charge a few quid and this will tell you where the car is, Citroen also have the data because the VIN says where/when it was made but not where it is now Quote
