Hi,

My 2004 C5 VTR is ready for it's 100,000 mile service, this is the one that has to have the cam belt changed my question is, is it really important that it should go to a Citroen main dealer for this service or can a local Citreon specialist garage do it? as you can imagine the cost is a lot less at the local garage but if it's important that it goes to a main dealer I would rather put it there, after all you can last without food for a few days can't you!

There is no reason why it cant be done by an independant, as long as they do everything according to the service schedule. I was going to go down this route but ended up with the main dealer, for two reasons, some independants didnt know what was required and the main dealer was doing an offer no VAT so it was only £425

I used an indie for the belt change which was done early on indie advice after they showed me a C8 with a broken belt.

Give us a rough location we can advise on an indie, possibly.

I was charged about £500 for the belt change including labour, VAT and all the required new tensioner type extras.

I got quted from indie £500ish just for cam belt, then they wanted £150ish for the service, worth checking with your main dealer there not all rip offs

Thanks for the answers, I live in Nottingham if you know anywhere. There is a garage called The Citreon Clinic, but I don't know how good they are?

I live just down the road in Loughborough; there's Charnwood Car Company, who've been around for years, as Peugeot, Renault and Citroen dealers. Now an indie, with all the knowledge from the last 30 odd years! They also have a few courtesy cars as well.

They originally took the world record for a diesel car in the ZX Volcane TurboD (They still have it, in all its livery), from the 90's when they were a dealer.

Not used them in their current form (other than phone advice), but when a dealer, they were excellent (had a Volcane TD, after theirs whooped my Astra GTE 16v on the A6), and a Xantia. Only just gone back to Citroens after a 10 year absence, hence lack of recent use...

I can't help with your query but I too have a C8 with a broken cambelt that I could show you... sitting in pieces in a garage and I am facing paying all the repair bills out of my own pocket. At the end of the day, if I cant get it fixed at a reasonable cost then I will be about £10k out of pocket (cash I put towards buying the car, the outstanding loan and what I have to pay the garage to date) !!! No warranty, no full Citroen service history (although I do have a full service history from an independant garage), a car that is 5yrs & 5mths old with circa 57k miles on it and Citroen wont even make a good will payment to help me out. If I have learned one lesson out of this mess.. is get it done by Citroen.. may cost a bit more but then at least you might have some come back on them if it breaks .. That stuck in my throat to suggest giving Citroen more business but it seems its the only way you can make them take some responsibility. I certainly wont be recommending Citroen to anyone. Good luck..

Been quoted £225 for the cambelt change by the Indy that I use for all my servicing. Also recommended to have the water pump checked and replaced if any signs of scale on the shaft at an extra £100. Service is about £150 on top of that lot.

I'm sorry, I can't, can any other members suggest a place in Cambridgeshire?

Not quite Cambridgeshire, but if you can get to Bedford I have found Central Motors very good. I believe they are a Citroen approved service/repair outfit. 'Phone number is 01234 314151.

I have also used Chevronic Centre in Arlesey ('phone Rob Moss on 01462 731733) - they are right next to Arlesey station if you should commute into London.

Hope this helps.

Had mine done a couple of weeks ago at a local indie (where I always go).

It had been done at 100,000 miles but I had no way of knowing (bought the car at 114,000) so had it done to be on the safe side.

He said it had been done but the tensioner was buggered and the belt was rubbing against the cover and wouldn't have lasted all that long.

He changed the belt, tensioner and water pump, gave it a full service, replaced the exhaust centre section, renewed all the injector seals and washers, plus a few other odd jobs, £399 all in!
