Hi,

It's my first time on this site but I'd really appreciate some help please. I have a 1992 ZX 1.9D Avantage, 186000Miles....completely bombproof, runs off all manner of oils and diesels etc. I've owned it since new and it's never let me down. It's a low maintenance car but my MOT is fast approaching. I need to check the state of the rear brake shoes as I think they need changing.

1. Does anyone know what size socket I need to get the rear hub nut off please?

My second and last question relates to noise from the steering/suspension. When I drive off of a roundabout (for instance) and I'm turning left and accelerating I get a mild knocking sound from inside the nearside front wheelarch. The car was doing this last year and went through the MOT. However, it's got a bit worst with 12months driving. The guy who does the more complex mechanicanical work on the car reckons the shocks were "loose" inside themselves....purely due to old age. The shocks seem to function fine (bounce + return) etc. He couldnt find anything else wrong. Does anyone have any experience of this please? Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

Cheers

On the hub front i don't know what size socket it is but i think they are generally standard and halfords/motor factors do what is called a hub nut socket that is large and deep to give good grip over the hub.

It's probably the same size as the 206 and 306 Pugs. In which case you need a 32mm socket and a very long lever to undo it. It's torqued to 148lbs/ft.

Might be the outer joint on the drive shaft.

the rear hub huts are 30mm the fronts are 32 or sometimes 34mm as for the knocking on the front dont worry about it mines done for years and flys through its mot

Thanks everyone who replied. This knocking though..... Lordy Lord! It drives me mental. Possibly because I have mild/borderline OCD and I like things just so. It did go through last year with no questions so fingers crossed it will go through again this year.

Cheers!

The knocking may just be the anti roll bar drop link(s) if it's more of a rattle when driving over a rough surface. They are available quite cheaply on Ebay and take only a few minutes to change.

Cheers. Hope this helps. :o
