Hi All

I'm new to this Forum,so bear with me.

I have just changed my old beloved 1993 Xantia 1.8i for a 2000 X plate 2.0HDi - Coo - Posh eh?!

Registered 29/9/2000 but the Build ticket (still with the car !) says 19/05/2000 so it must have been parked in a field for four months.

The problem is - what Spec have I got?

The Log Book says "Forte" and the badge on the boot says "LX"

How do I tell? Does the Build date give our Experts the info and WHY would it be dual or confusewd ident?

ALSO - its a 2.0HDi but nowhere does it say whether its 90 or 110bhp. Someone told me that the 110 has an Intercooler but I wouldn't know what it looked like or where it is on the car - can anyone help?

cheers

Hi Sixchannel.

Look for a pipe coming forward next to the air cleaner at the right side of the engine as you look from the front of the car. That's the pipe taking air from the intercooler back to the inlet manifold. I believe the supply pipe from the turbo comes forward under the engine. Another way to tell is that the 110 has 205/60 x 15 tyres and the 90 has 185/65 x 15.

The Forte was a run-out special which was based on the LX spec and had a few more goodies to help shift the cars before the new C5 came along. A Forte should have "Forte" badging on the front wings like the Picassos do.

Cheers hope this helps. ;)

the 90 bhp has the engine code RHY and the 110 is RHZ

Thanks to Colin and Techbod.

The engine code is RHY and it does indeed run on 185 tyres.

No "Forte" logos anywhere. Only the LogBook said it was a Forte otherwise I'd have believed it to be a LX mdel.

Weird anomolies - no sunblind on parcelshelf (even my beloved and much missed 1993 Xantia had that!!) but it has 4 airbags. It has some odd plastic headlight protectors - surely not an after market fit? The radio cassette is utter crap and no speakers in the doors - again my 1993 Xantia had a better radio than this. No mudflaps either - Beancounters at work??

cheers

Hi Ian.

I think the parcel shelf sunblind was discontinued with the introduction of the Mk2. My 1998 110 LX didn't have one either. My previous 2 LXs did, but to be fair I didn't use it that much anyway! If you're desperate for one you'll always find a dead Xantia in a scrapyard!

The plastic Headlamp protectors are an aftermarket addition that you may or may not want to keep, but I can't understand why your door speakers are missing unless the last owner removed them to fit his own which he has taken out again. If the grills are there then the speakers should also be there! Have a look for loose wires in the door cavity. They should be there! I always found my standard fit rad/cass system OK, but then I only ever listen to radio 2 anyway! (SAD!)

Mudflaps were never standard. They were a dealer option which some cars had at the first owners discretion.

Cheers. Hope this helps. ;)

Hi Colin

Very interesting info - Many thanks!

The blind was really useful to someone who has a dog to keep cool in the back. Now I'm down to using one of them cheapo rubber sucker stick on thingys!!

Speakers - I took the covers off the doors and as you suspected -NO SPEAKERS - just a pair of wires. So, off to jolly old Halfords for a pair and now the radio is VASTLY improved. Even Radio 2 is good. (is there any other better station??)

The headlight protectors are a bit of quirky Citroen fun and I think I'll keep them on - just because they are different. Cleaning them is going to be a long winded job though - as far as I can see, you have to remove the centre panel before you can get them off for cleaning.

Hi Again.

Did you check the rear doors as well as the fronts? Xantias all had 6 speakers, including the two "Tweeters" on the dash. They may be past their best due to being in such an exposed (To sun) position. they had fallen to bits on one of my Xantias and were not expensive to replace (From Citroen), although I dare say you could find equivalent ones elsewhere.

If you're desperate for CD sound quality, the head unit should be capable of driving a changer, but you may have difficulty finding a compatible one. A car audio specialist should be able to help. Another way is to do what I did and buy a "Digisette" which is an MP3 player shaped like a cassette which goes into the slot like one of those adapters, but has all the gubbins inside it. I was very pleased with mine. It also doubles as a stand alone player that you can use with headphones and will even record from a cassette driva and directly encode to MP3! Quite a clever little gadget.

Cheers. Hope this helps. :D

Hi Colin

No speakers in the rear doors!! I think I'll be back at Halfords again at the weekend. :D

If I want to check on the condition of the tweeters, how do I get them out of the dash?

cheers

Hi Again.

The dashboard tweeters can be removed by carefully prising out the mesh covers and undoing the screws that will then be visible. If you were getting sound from them before you fitted the door speakers they're probably OK though. Also, if thespeakers you fitted to your front doors had a tweeter built in then you won't really need them

Cheers. Happy listening! :D

Thanks again, Colin.

Nope! No speakers in the back doors either. I feel another trip to Halfords coming on. Why take them out? Go figure!!

No handbook for the radio with the car so I have been pressing buttons to see what happens. I found one on the Audio button, which says "FAD" on the screen and that seems to give a mix between front and back (if I had any!!) speakers. I've set them so that the front ones are the loudest I can get. I presume that when I put speakers in the back, I'll have to tweak that setting?

Chances are that whoever owned the car had fitted aftermarket speakers. The standard Citroen Speakers have a bespoke (citroen) plug which must be removed before an aftermarket speaker can be fitted. I suppose that this (Probably subhuman) "Person" had removed "their" speakers and couldn't be arsed to restore the car to standard before selling it on. In my opinion, such people should be shot with a ball of their own S**T and barred from ever owning a car again.

Happy (eventual) listening!
