I have just had the front discs and pads replaced on my 2000 Xantia. After 2 weeks, the ABS light has come on (and goes out only intermitently). It is usually on from a cold start but when the brakes are used for the first time and coming to a slow gentle braked stop at the end of my side road, I can feel the ABS kicking the pedal, which it shouldn't do. Once I have got going this does not happen and I have checked that the ABS is NOT working by trying a skid stop (safely of course!!) and the front wheels lock up.

What is making the ABS stop working?

cheers

check the wiring to the ABS sensor and clean the ABS ring of any muck/grease, as long as the light goes out it really doesn't have a major issue and because it comes on intermittent sends my thought to the front wheel sensors since you just changed the pads,

once the car is jacked up and ignition turned on then running the engine always turns the ABS light on because the car isnt on all 4 wheels so it thinks there is a problem but it clears after a short drive

Thanks again,Techbod! :D

Curiously - the ABS light is now OFF, BUT this afternoon any braking ended in the 'kicking' from left to right when almost at a standstill as if it thought it was skidding. But - I have just come back from a short run out and everything seems to be working absolutely NORMAL now!!?? Go Figure!

Come the weekend I will have a look-see.

Took the Xantia to my local Indeoendent Citroen specialist. He put a Code Reader on the car and it said "Front Rotor Fault" or similar. He re-set the car to Zero and, so far, there have been no problems with the brakes at all - everything behaving normally.

What could have set it off in the first place?

cheers

its fairly common for this to happen when the wheel is of the floor and ignition turned on then you press the break to close the gap on the pads the ABS ECU see it as a fault and logs a code but most time it resets when driven a few miles ( your didn't ) very strange or there might have been some dirt on the sensor head and it cleared then the code should have reset, its not like the engine ECU and doesn't store codes but if something is wrong the codes can be extracted with the right tools and when the issue is fixed then the code should clear its self but in some cases it needs to be reset and that's more the newer cars like the C5/6
