martinhext Posted January 1, 2009 Posted January 1, 2009 My xantia has just failed its mot on a split steering rack gaiter and a couple of other things, just wondering has anyone changed one of these before? I'm going to do it myself and just wanted to know if there was anything i need to look out for when i'm doing it. It looks easy enough but I've been fooled many times before. Quote

martinhext Posted January 10, 2009 Author Posted January 10, 2009 Have had a go at this but i've only managed to get the track rod end seperated from the wheel hub and the ram disconected from the rack. However there is a stud that secures the ram to the rack that doesnt appear to be removable which prevents me from getting the new gaiter on. Is there any way to remove the entire track rod from the steering rack because i think i might be able to pull the gaiter over the stud and the rack then. The offside gaiter looks pretty simple but the nearside is a pain. Quote
techbod Posted January 10, 2009 Posted January 10, 2009 yes you will need to remove the track rod end but a little tip ( put the ball joint back in to loosen the rod from the shaft ) otherwise you will have a pig of a job because the track rod rotates when your trying to undo the locking bolt Quote
martinhext Posted January 10, 2009 Author Posted January 10, 2009 Cheers for that, also whats the best way to get the track rod inner cover off. I thought it was just a case of levering it off with a screwdriver but i dont want to damage it. Quote
techbod Posted January 10, 2009 Posted January 10, 2009 inner cover? or do you mean the old boot also the track rod end screws off and make sure you take a measurement to the threads when putting it back together otherwise it will need re-tracking and that means spending unnecessary dosh Quote
martinhext Posted January 10, 2009 Author Posted January 10, 2009 no i meant the end that joins with the steering rack itself. It has a rubber cover over the balljoint there in the same area the ram joins onto the steering rack. Quote
techbod Posted January 10, 2009 Posted January 10, 2009 never seen a rubber cover on my old cars so it might need pulling it over the ball joint so you can undo it Quote
techbod Posted January 10, 2009 Posted January 10, 2009 ahhh I know what you mean and it doesn't need to come off there just cut the old boot off and slide the new one over it then use tie raps to lock it in placea cheat way is to turn the boot inside out then force it over the ball joint which will turn it outside in, sounds daft but I do that with cv boots Quote
martinhext Posted January 10, 2009 Author Posted January 10, 2009 I've probably made a mess of trying to describe it. The track rod end, one end is attached to the wheel and the other end connects to the steering rack. That end has a balljoint which has a boot on it. Just wondered if there was a way to get that off without damaging it as it seems like a pretty tight fit Quote
techbod Posted January 10, 2009 Posted January 10, 2009 hmmm you could heat it up with a hair drier to make it loose then push it off failing that it will need to be cut off and don't put another one on just put plenty of grease on it ( don't know why they put it on in the first place as they must know it has to come off to replace the track rod ) hot water might loosen it http://i469.photobucket.com/albums/rr53/techbod/103312.jpg the locking nut in the middle is where its joined so no need to remove the far end Quote
martinhext Posted January 11, 2009 Author Posted January 11, 2009 Well job done, cheers for the advice. I think i just got lucky enough to have purchased the worlds strechiest gaiter. Quote
techbod Posted January 11, 2009 Posted January 11, 2009 sound like it went well then ( always go for the stretch boot even the cv boot it saves a lot of time ) all the garages that I know use them " I always though every one knew about the stretch boots " not the others lol  Quote
