Hi all,

Got into my Xantia yesterday, turned the key and the starter motor turned and then gradually slowed to nothing. I obviously jumped to the conclusion that the battery is flat (it is possible that i may have left the lights on for some time the day previously, but i had used the car since with no problem). Having taken the battery out of the car and left it on charge all night, i put it back in this morning and theres nothing at all when i turn the key.

Is there something i need to do with the immobilisor to reset it? Found one post on here about locking the doors for 5 minuits but that didn't work. Or could it be the starter motor, at the risk of sounding thick where is mounted it on this car and when i find it can i try the old whack with a hammer to free it if it is this?

Guess the main suspect has to remain the battery, maybe my chargers not working properly or the battery's just had it, but it looks quite new. Just want to exhaust any other "free" possibilities before i spend money i havn't got on a new battery. Incidentally, lights come on and radio etc works so theres enough power for that, theres just one click when io turn the key and nothing else?

Any helps appreciated

sorry, forgot to mention its a 2000 X reg model and the immobiliser is in the key and not the keypad type-immobiliser light goes out on the dash when the ignition is turned on

Problem sorted for the time being!

Found the starter motor and with the help of a lump of wood and a mallet gave a few good whacks and she turned over and started up and has behaved herself since.

Time will tell if it lasts. Does anyone know what actually happens when you hit them and they magically start working, its a method i've used a few times in the past but never really understood how it works, your enlightenment would be interesting

I had a similar problem with a 1.9 TD. It appeared to be a battery or starter motor problem as the car would be fine and then the next time it was started (even after only a 5 min stop) it appeared that the battery was flat and would only turn over slowly and not start. We suspected the heater plug relay was sticking on and flattening the battery. Fitted a new one. NO CHANGE. Fitted new battery. NO CHANGE. We were going to change the starter motor when I happened to check out the battery earth to the engine. This goes to a bolt on the gearchange bracket on the gearbox. It may look OK at first sight but look UNDER the bracket with a mirror and you may see, as we did, a mass of white corrossion between the steel bracket and the alloy gearbox. Result! Poor Earth.

To cure this we simply removed the earth wire from it's place and coupled it to a bellhousing bolt. PROBLEM SOLVED!

Cheers. Hope this helps.
