BEWARE THE CHILD LOCK DISSABLES THE OUTSIDE LOCK AND THE CENTRAL LOCKING, PUT IT ON AND YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO OPEN THE DOOR. WHO DESIGNED THAT!!!

I had the unable to open rear door with child lock on, problem C5 2001....

To open rear door... remove inner door panel. You will need a set of Torx screw drivers. Prize out button on the rear door inner release handle remove srew. Prize off plastic trim, Prize off inner door handle outer cover, and the small triangular cover at rear corner of window, remove 2 large screws . Prize off speaker cover, remove speaker, and electric window switch, manual handle just pulls off remove 1 screw at bottom inside speaker enclosure. Prize off inner door panel, starting by speaker, this is very tight a lot of leaverage required lift up and off. Peel off membrane at top left pull it away cut glue line with sharp knife you will be able to stick it back down. Examine the bottom of the door lock with torch you will see a white cover hook your finger behind at the bottom you will feel the child lock shaft push your finger up against it and rotate towards inside of car, it will turn to the off position and all the locks will return to normal.Stick some tape over child lock and dont use again!!

Are you saying that if you use the child lock , there's then no way of opening the door again ?

its an internal fault in the mech itself and not a design fault. fit a new mech and you will have no more probs.

I second that iannez, as we had this fault in both rear doors in our 2003 C5, and both were fixed by main dealer under warranty, and they've been fine since. And we still can't trust the kids not to fiddle with the doors, so they are always on child lock setting.

Hi!

I seem to have the same problem with my 2002 C5 offside rear door... not sure if it's because of Child lock or not, but the door cannot be opened from inside or outside... just to clarify, can the procedure you describe all be carried out with the door still closed? Or do you have do some trickery to get the door open in the first place?

Thanks!

...before attempting to dismantle the car try this, lock the car first with key, then unlock with key and whilst doing this simultaneously slap the back door under the rear handle, you may need an assistant. This has worked on many an early C5 (though not if the child lock has been engaged).

Cheers

In the end it turned out that the Child Lock had not been engaged. I tried the slapping idea but it didn't work, but while driving (and accelerating or braking) I heard a snap noise from the stuck door. Tried opening from outside and it didn't work. But later, just as a thought tried opening from inside and it did work.

now it simply doesn't open from outside but does from inside (whatever snapped, caused the block to go away but has disconnected the outside handle)

There was a similar problem with the front driver door, can open from inside handle but not from outside. some shaft or connector had snapped and the garage fixed it with a self-tapping screw. So maybe some piece was under stress and was causing the "stuck"ness, and now it has snapped. I guess another self tapping screw may be in order...

I thought I had this same problem and couldn't believe my luck when I stumbled across this thread, however upon disassembling the inside of my door fiddling around in the small dark cramped place of my door lock and locating this shaft and finally being able to turn it in both directions quite a few times my door still will not free itself and both handles remain inoperative along with the central locking.

Does anybody else have any further explanations as to what has happened?

Just a tip for anybody else attempting this manouvere of rotating the child lock shaft from the inside, I found that a simple latex glove managed to grip the shaft enough to rotate it extremely easy so forget your fancy expensive tools, get yourself a latex glove worth about 2 pence

Hi

I think this method only works if the door has got locked due to a malfunction in the child lock. Even in my case it was not the child lock but some internal plastic that was stuck (and later broke).

Thanx Lightshaft! Just fixed my rear door problem after stumbling across this forum and my rear d/s door been locked since I put the child lock on 3 months ago! I could not turn the shaft with my finger but found out you dont have to go behind the white plastic guard. Shine a tourch at the lock and there is a black plastic round cover the size of a 10p piece.pull this back and it reveals the child lock mechanism. it is similar to the outside switch as in it is red with a cut through the middle. either side is a piece of black plastic that can be easily flicked up or down to turn the child lock on and off. Once again thanks for you invaluable advice! :o
