Hi All,

Few days back I bought my first car, a Citeron Xsara 1.4 Petrol, 2003 manufactured, (yuhooo!!). I have only started getting used to it and straight away ran into a bit of puzzle and was wondering you you guys would be able to help me. My coolant expansion tank seems to be empty (although the temp indicator is stable at a halfway point), and not sure which variant of coolant I have to use. The plastic tank has a reddish tinge to it, which I assume would be from the previous coolant type being used. So am I ok with just buying a red colour coolant refill from supermarket and giving it a go, or should I get some advice from a garage??

Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated,

Thanks in advance,

Best Wishes,

MTP

There are different types of antifreeze and some of them don't mix well with others. If it were my car I would drain off the old stuff, flush it through and refill. Some makes should be renewed every two years; others every five years. I wonder why the level should be low. Ideally the level shouldn't fall.

Thanks John. I will probably take the car to a garage and get it checked. I went back to look at the coolant and could tell what type is currently in use, so rather than second guessing I think as you suggested, I should get it drained and start from scratch. Not sure myself as to why the level is low. It may show up as a leak if there is one.
