Guest Not Mechanical Posted September 27, 2010 Posted September 27, 2010 I have a Citroen Xsara 2.0 hdi 51 plate. Im really hoping someone can help. Ive been to a couple of mechanics already. Basically when im driving the car is just cutting out completely, electrics still work e.g. radio, wipers but engine shuts down. As you can imagine this is quite dangerous, i have an 18 month old daughter and i daren't take her out in the car. The first mechanic said it was the cam shaft position sensor, which ive replaced. The second one said it was the fuel pump which ive had replaced today but still no luck. Im at my wits end and this is costing me a fortune. I dont know what else to try. When i turn my key i hear a low humming noise which i believe is the fuel pump kicking in and the car will start. When the hum doesnt happen the car doesnt start?! Please HelpMichelle Quote
Johndouglas Posted September 28, 2010 Posted September 28, 2010 The second one said it was the fuel pump which ive had replaced today but still no luck. Is that the fuel pump in the tank which you've had replaced? It's controlled by a relay. It may be the relay or the connection that's giving you grief. Quote

Michelle, Can I suggest you get your mechanic to check fuel pressure, and maybe replace the 'fuel pressure regulator', your symptoms fit and this seems to be a common problem with the Xsara and pug 306 now that they are starting to age. CheersChrissorry forgot to add the car will run for about an hour before it does it.It seems to be when the car has warmed up it cuts out. Some times it restarts in 10 seconds sometimes its 5 mins but will keep cutting out. Johndouglas Posted September 28, 2010 Posted September 28, 2010 .whereabouts is the relay? Under the bonnet, near the windscreen. They can get damp in them and they become intermittent. But you might be better off getting the fault codes read with a diagnostic connection. Quote

Guest Not Mechanical Posted September 29, 2010 Posted September 29, 2010 UPDATE!!! Just had rac out because car cut out again. After 1 hour finally found out what the problem was.... The mechanic noticed that the engine management light on the dashboard wasnt coming on. When he was under the bonnet he pulled the brown relay box a bit and hey presto engine started. He had already checked the pins for erosion and said they were fine, so he said the problem was between the wire and the pin. He stopped the engine a few more times just to verify that this was the cause and the time it didnt start he did the same thing and it started straight away. Thanks to everyone that has posted and hope this helps a few more people if they start to have the same problem Michelle Quote
