Guest shenden Posted January 29, 2011 Posted January 29, 2011 Hi there i have a c5 2.0 hdi LX fuel type heavy oil and manual gear box. The car is a 51 plate, 2001, the engine code starts with DYKA , I am not shore if its the 90bhp or the 120. And its done 130.000 miles and is a right good old horse If any one could help me with this i would be glad to call you god. Ok the car had not had a service and was starting to run like a old dog so with the mot about due i thought better give it a shape up, Now this problem began weeks before me servicing it, You get in and start it and most times i flatten the battery by doing this, I put 4 new glow plugs in last week and 2 of the old 4 were shot so any way i get it started have to hold it on the key until it picks up and it fine then i warm it a little then take it to 2500 to 3000 revs and if i hold the throttle there is start to rev high then low kind of lurching then i get blue smoke out the back tail pipe. Rev it to 3500 or 4000 and it clears rev it below 2500 and it clears. I must add it does not use a drop of water and does not seem to use oil. Then when i drive it sort of goes mad some times would not go over 90mph flat out and then it kicks and boom your up to 115mph. Now 70mph is good for me but god its so flat, Its funny in every gear you hit the 3000rpm and it kicks and goes and then some times it says no cant be done with doing that today your on a slow day, I put a new fuel filter in and it went like a bomb for 10 miles then turned it off and we went back to go slow again. I then took the i think its the mass or maf the big one on the air box thing ma jib it was oily and i cleaned it by spraying it with carb cleaner but did not touch it. Then i pulled the wire of the little censor is it the maff on the air pipe near the radiator engine went nutty low revs 3000 no more i thought well that seems to be working same thing with the mass engine down to 3000. Now i cant even find the EGR to check that. There is a little bit of oil around the bottom of the Oh god my heads gone blank the thing that looks like a small radiator and sits beside it, Sorry. There are no lights popping up on the dash to tell me any thing is wrong. If any one could help me i you would make my day because my heads in bits from thinking it might be this or that but don't want to start taking good bits of more so because of how dear they are to replace you no. Cheers for taking a peek thank you in advance. Inter cooler and i want one so i am off for a pint cheers. Quote
Guest xsaraiihdi Posted January 29, 2011 Posted January 29, 2011 Hi shenden As far as I am aware there where only two 2.0 ltr engines fitted to the 2001 C5 one is the RHY 90BHP and the other RHZ 110BHP both turbo charged. If you look at the Chassis Number *****RHZ******** this will tell you the engine code. Mark Quote
Guest shenden Posted January 30, 2011 Posted January 30, 2011 Hi shenden As far as I am aware there where only two 2.0 ltr engines fitted to the 2001 C5 one is the RHY 90BHP and the other RHZ 110BHP both turbo charged. If you look at the Chassis Number *****RHZ******** this will tell you the engine code. Mark Thanks for looking and yes your very right i just looked on the log book under the D.2 section and it states 2 things it says Variant DCRHZ* then Version D*RHZ. I all ways thought it was the 90bhp so thats cheered me up a bit lol. I love the car had it a couple of years now with no problems but the last 6 weeks has just been a night mare with it more so because i just cant stand things that dont work how there suppose to and the mph is now taking a pasting. I have just came back from having a pint and a bloke down the boozer that builds land rover engines for a living said 2 things he said one it sounds like the fuel is dropping back on its self in the night as in the bad starting and as it goes i thought this my self and then he said the egr valve sounds like its gamed up and sticking a bit. He said you can some times clean them but and as nuts as this is i cant find it. I went down and got the C5 Haynes Manual and unless i am going blind i cant see the dam thing and i must add that book really is not worth the money its not like the old school books they made. Any way i think what i will do tomorrow is take the fuel filter out again check the lines on it for dirt so on then put a new one in again and make shore the rubber seal is seating proper and that its as tight as when i first took it off. That was a pain in its self just getting that to come off when i put the new one in last week. Will that ecu give out any codes as to errors that do not light the dash lights up only i see a bit of soft ware and leads and so on to connect to a laptop for 110.00 pounds and as i want to well have to keep the car i thought i might get it and see if i can learn how to use it but hope not to knead it lol Quote
Guest shenden Posted January 30, 2011 Posted January 30, 2011 Update today....The car started more or less on the money this morning and went like a bomb. I could also here a different tone from the engine more of a rumble than a gagagaga. Stopped it then had a cup of tea went back out started it and the gagaga was back and this time the revs would serge when you held it at about 4000 revs plus a little blue smoke. Went for a drive in it engine running as flat as a pancake and then the serging dropped back to 2500 3000 revs as in you hold the throttle at 2500 revs and it starts to kick and rev up to 3000 and back to 2500. Would the EGR make this happen. The Turbo kicks in at about the 2500 rpm mark and seems to be doing its job. I still have to check the new fuel filter and rubber seal but as i say it was doing this well before i put that in but i must check it just in case its pinched the rubber and its sucking in a tiny bit of air. Ah while i am at it when i put the new glow plugs in the number 1 glow plug as in the left hand side one had a lot of oil on it were the rest was dry so i am going to check that again pull it out see if its dry or still oil on it. Guest shenden Posted January 30, 2011 Posted January 30, 2011 Hello hope your all good...Ok i had a small peek at the EGR valve and some thing seems odd about it. I started the engine up screamed it for a minute or two then let it stand warm up a bit. I then took the little air pipe of the EGR valve and nothing happened i thought thats a bit odd so i put my finger over the EGR side nipple no air nothing no suck then did the same to the breather pipe same thing no air no suck so i think what i will try tomorrow is to get a push bike pump and pump some air one way or another down the egr or the breather pipe and see if the engine revs drop and as to the EGR Solenoid or the pump i have no idea were they are to try to check them. As you can tell i am a master mechanic but only with Lego . If any one can pouint me in the direction of the pump or the EGR Solenoid that would be very helpful to me thanks in advance. I dont no if this has any thing to do with it but around the same time as the car started to run flat the heater thing stopped working the air con works and kicks in when you hit the green button but the button beside it its kind of a surround airflow button it lights up when you push it but does not push the air around no more but the normal heater works. coastline taxis Posted January 30, 2011 Posted January 30, 2011 Wow Right then where to start The way you want to go with this first is to forget about the bike pump youl do more harm than good. your landrover friend has pointed you in the right directions but just pulling this and that of hoping for results is not the way forward. Bite the bullet and take it to the dealers to plug it in they can then actuator test on the egr valve, fuel pump etc etc. If you dont want to go down that route then start by checking all the rubber pipes, wires etc. Battery side of the car just behind the fuse box there a black plastic cover remove it and youl have acsess to the solonoids and more tubing. And are you saying the car hasnt had a service in a 130k (your oricinal posting)if so you MUST do a full service with a oil flush and drain the intercooler before you can go any further Quote

Its all ways had a service as in the records show it has but i don't no how believable that is so any way i did a oil change 3 times in 1 year. Some thing i did do what was very wrong i no but the MPG went down to some thing stupid like 20 mpg i then took the air filter out and went to wash it but the thing went in to a pulp i then thought ok i will get a new one like i should have done the next day but forgot then i noticed the car was back to good mpg on taking the air filter out. God i ran it like that for 8 months and i have only just put one back in. The mpg is back to well its on and off real erratic good then terrible. Good service yes your right very right. i spent 300 pounds on oil and filters brake pads and so on last week so i am just beginning to put them all on. As it goes i found out it was an old taxi. Its bin a good old dog tho normal problems like going up and down on its own lights flash on high beam on there own the back end is creaking. It eats front tires i put drop links on last week so front end is a joy now. The radio would come on then the volume would go down to a kind of mute put it to am and it was all good. But its a good horse it keeps going. In fact i would love to no if any one has managed to blow one of those cars up because i got so mad with it i stuck it in first gear and must have drove 2 miles flat out. I no stupid but it was a bad day please don't ask why lol. Right i will have a muster under the bonnet tomorrow again. I could here a slight hiss but its very faint very faint and i cant seem to get my ear in the direction its coming from so it could be i hope a simple broke pipe but yes i will take that inter cooler off and flush it because it needs it bad i am shore of that. If it was summer i would take all the pipes of and flush them all because they do all seam a bit gunky. Right i will do one thing at a time oil change and filter then fuel filter again then flush the inter cooler then new air filter then clean what breather pipes i can get to then follow the Egr valve pipes check for beaks and i think i will just renew them any way then check the fuse boxs because you never no and then last try to check the solenoid or even replace it. i have forgot some thing there. Also it is going in for a cam belt and belts and water pump change 2 weeks from now as the cam belt is playing on my mind. Thanks very much i will have a crack at it and take it bit buy bit and see how we get on and i will post back how she takes shape. Thank you. Oh real sorry about my spelling and grammar i was on a motorbike down the fields when the rest were at school. Now wish i had stuck with school. Quote
Guest kimosabe Posted January 31, 2011 Posted January 31, 2011 ha ha is this a wind up Shoor sownds lick it Quote
Guest shenden Posted February 1, 2011 Posted February 1, 2011 No its not a wind up. I am good enough with old car engines but new ones i am not to tec on them i am 68 for gods sake. The days of being a macanic are well gone. The car macanic that works in a garage these days is a spare part fitter. Yes you have to look at the computer and read the codes and so on but you don't fix it you just replace the part so no its not a wind up. And up the top of there it says Citroen owners club not Citroen main dealer macanics club that no every thing so gives them the right to call me a wind up merchant so thats why i have asked for some help . Ok i gave the car a oil change and oil filter with the recommended oil from the Haynes manual i then took the old fuel filter out that was only a week or 2 old put a new one in cleaned the pot or chamber and put a new rubber seal on it and got it as tight as i could. I then took the glow plugs out again and checked them on my 12 volt battery charger and there all working and they should do any way as there brand new from last week but i just wanted to make shore of 2 things one i had seated them in proper and 2 that i did not have any shorts on them i then checked the power to them and that lit my lamp up but the left hand number one glow plug has still got oil on it. Now i made a major bollock next i followed the pipe from the egr to the censor or solenoid what ever its called and i took the right hand pipe of that sucks and the engine went down as in revs good i thought but it does not do this if i take the pipe of the egr but then i thought it has a censor of some sort in it so it may not do that on tick over so i wedged a brick on the throttle and took it to about 3000 rpm took the pipe of the egr and nothing no suck no engine drop in revs nothing. Now for the major bollock drop there is what i could see 3 solenoids or censors that sit in a group 2 on top and one sits under the two top ones well the one that has the other pipe leading of the top branch t peace as in the other top one the back one i think well any way i tried to ease the pipe off it as you do and snapped the bloody plastic so it has to have a new one of them what ever the case. I am going to get all 3 because i cant be shitted with snapping any more just new ones and those parts are out the way. I checked all the fuse box and all is good but i cant check the relays. I take it those censor things will be Citroen parts and i cant get pattern parts. Right by this time i had had a gut full and was a bit peeved off with snapping the plastic nipple thing so of i went for a pint. Tomorrow i will take the inter cooler off and flush it or i am going to take it some were to be done because i have no idea what to flush it with. Petrol Nitro paraffin i don't no so i will see how i feel about that when i wake up tomorrow. I have to go to the my main local Citroen dealer tomorrow any way to order the solenoid thing so maybe they may have a gallon of some thing over there that your suppose to do it with. Still its been a bit of a productive day engine sounds better from the new oil. Quote
Guest shenden Posted February 1, 2011 Posted February 1, 2011 Oh yes oh a big yes My car is Rocking now. In fact i had forgot how fast that car was and if i do say i don't think it was as fast as that when i bought the car in the first place. Never again will i let a Stupid Minnie Metro take me on the duel carriageway again. I had to look away i was so ashamed. Coastline taxis the man that likes c5 and John Smiths i have to thank you for showing me were that egr valve solenoid thing sat. As you no i snapped one any way so had to buy a new one but i put all 3 on at a total cost of 135.00 pounds 45 each so pricey but worth it. I took the inter cooler to a local garage and gave them a tenner to use there engine wash base. Now i did a bodge next so i have ordered a new egr at 75 pounds he said thats cheep because they were 160 but they have come down in price thank god. The bodge was i shot a blast or 3 of plus gas into the egr in fact i drowned it last night. Put every thing back on tonight fired it up and it sounded bang on. I took of in it for a test spin as you do and had more fun than i have had in a lot of years. I cant get over the bloody difference its gone from a flint stone car to a lotus. At citroen the bloke said it would cost 75 pounds just to put it on a diagnostic thing ma jig so that payed for the egr. Ahahaahah right well thats it i am now skint and will have to sub a 20 to go for a tiny little celebration party down the local pub to night. I also love a good pint or 7 of that John Smiths but it makes my guts feel like they have had a Turbo Explosion in them man it don't half give me the trots the next day. Thanks again...I am doing a pdf file of the c5 Haynes Manual umm should be done this week its 2001 to 2008 (y to o8 reg petrol and diesel i have to find a web site to upload it to this week then i will post a link here to it. It may be of some use to some one but dont hold your breath. Cheers again Quote
Guest shenden Posted February 19, 2011 Posted February 19, 2011 And you thought it was a wind up ah lol i wish. Right well i got the thing plugged in to a SnapOn diagnostic thing ma jig and the bloke gave me the codes it had stored as follows, P1537 un docPo246 Boost pressure low??? Not shore about this one because in the c5 codes it gives that code as to highPo235 Map Sensor CircuitP0101 Air Mass Sensor Circuit Po380 Glow RelayP0403 Egr Valve Circuit I don't no how true those codes are as in from the box he was usingNow i also forgot to say i had a duff battery and changed it for a bosh on the cheep 15 pounds from a tire blokeIts a bit stronger than my old one and thats thinking about it when my problems first started so i have now took the dam thing off as i thought there was a chance i was maybe banging to much power in to it at high revs. Ok hahaha the problem has returned 3 new solenoids 1 new egr and pipes new filter new oil new glow plugs new air filter and fuel filter flush the inter cooler out. And more things but i have forgot now but any way now when you get in start it you can hold the throttle wide open full bore sit there no problem apart from its revving its nuts off. Then you take it out on to the road you can go full bore though the gear box until it hits around 70 and boom it backs the throttle off on you then if you hold it there as in keep it toed it begins to bark back in then out again. Its very strange. I wanted to do a live diagnostic as in when your driving it clear the codes as in reset then hoof it on the road to about 70 were it it will then begin to play its games but that snap on thing is like a car in its self its massive so no chance and i am not putting a generator in the bloody boot just to power the thing i mean can you imagine getting pulled over by the feds. Ah i got me mot i put new brakes on it all round. Front breaks were easy and a pleasure to do but the rear ahahahahahaah the pins had stuck if you no what i mean and it was dark and raining and i smashed the only light i had with a slip of a spanner but got them done by plus gas and 2 pair of mold grips to gently ease the pin up and down. Once they were out easy peasy. I did do a power check to the EGR when it goes in to shat mode and there is no power but then turn the car off give it 20 seconds on again and power is back to the egr solenoid and you can here them all fluttering and they all seem to get hot. Any one no were that power comes from or is it a safety thing from the ecu telling it to shut off. Right be good i kneed a pint Quote
Guest shenden Posted February 22, 2011 Posted February 22, 2011 Ok i blew me scanner up and have about 20 pages left to do on that Haynes pdf so i will get a scanner up and running tomorrow as i have 3 in the shed. I cant find any were to host 4 gigs of pdf file so i think what i will do is upload it to my flicker account then run it though my web site because i can get the pictures to all follow suit in one line on my site. You no so you dont have to keep pressing next frame because that sucks. I will put the name of the site up as soon as its done say friday i hope. Maybe of use to one or 2 people timing marks and breaks and so on you no. And i must say my god Haynes has gone down hill even the paper they use its terrible for scanning. I all so have a Citroen BX Haynes Manual petrol 1983 to 1993 Engine sizes 1360cc 1580cc 1905cc well if any one wants any pages scanned and emailed to them no problom just shout me. In fact i have all the old school books cortina jag volvo renault 5 9 11 21 25 Oh i will make a list it will be a better way of doing it but there all old school as i say but your welcome to any thing from them.
