Guest doggiedexter Posted January 30, 2011 Posted January 30, 2011 Hi, I need to remove the drivers airbag and steering wheel to swop over the coms unit. I understand I need to disconnect the battery before touching the airbag, do i disconnect both (+) and (-) terminals or just the live(+). Do I need to keep the negative attached to avoid problems with the immobiliser/alarm at all or can i just whip them both off. Does anyone know how to remove the airbag from the steering wheel / best method? (non esp model so no angle reset needed) Thanks in advance for any help. Vehicle - 2002 C5 2.0 HDi lx 110bhp Quote
coastline taxis Posted January 30, 2011 Posted January 30, 2011 Best to remove both terminals and take the battery out. That way you know there no chance of any acidental reconection. To remove the airbag first remove the cowling around the steering wheel then straighten the wheel up and put your hands in the 9.15 position and move them behind the steering wheel and youl feel 2 holes. Theres no screws or nuts/bolts holding it on. Its held on with something similar to a hook and eye system use a mirror or put your fingers in and youl feel a thin metal bar Thesse need to be pushed out over on each side and the airbag will just pull away. Weve used picks/screwdrivers all kinds to pull them apart. be carfull that you dont pull to hard on the airbag as if it comes away to quick youl run the risk of snapping one of the wires Quote

Good news about the whole battery out as i need to change the headlight bulb that side too. I assume after disconnecting the battery i just wait 10mins or so before removing airbag to let everything discharge? Quote
coastline taxis Posted February 2, 2011 Posted February 2, 2011 Follow the procecure for letting the ecu go to sleep before disconecting the battery and everything will be fine to work on straight away Quote
Guest doggiedexter Posted February 5, 2011 Posted February 5, 2011 Follow the procecure for letting the ecu go to sleep before disconecting the battery and everything will be fine to work on straight away Thanks for both of the advice above. Job now done, airbag was a little hard to remove but after jamming 2 screwdrivers in eachside it eventually popped out. Luckily I now have control over when the lights come on and go off. Well until this com2000 unit breaks that is. Thanks again Quote
