Hi there everyone!

Just about to buy a 2004 Citroen C8 SX 2.0 Petrol car but getting really concerned about reviews I am reading regarding early cambelt failures..... I want the garage to replace but they wont as they have said it is not due as only done 58,000. Getting rather confused as have noticed most of the reviews are regarding the diesel version and cant find anything really on the petrol versions. Can someone let me know if it is just a problem with diesel engines or does it apply to petrol also?? Not too sure whether I should continue with sale. I really like the car but worried about cambelt failure and then more money involved. Am due to collect car on Tuesday...

Thanks in advance for any help I get.

If you intend to keep the car for a few years the cambelt will need replacing anyway so best to do it soon (get a price for this) and then no need to worry about it failing. My C5 service book gives the timing belt change frequency for the C8 petrol as every 75k miles for normal use and every 48k miles for severe use (main use in town, short journeys). Hence replacement in the next year or so is necessary and many people would suggest it is better to replace a belt before the recommended mileage. When doing this also replace the tensioners/pulleys/water pump if also driven by the belt. If the garage will not replace the belt, make sure it is covered by the warranty they are providing.

Thanks so much for quick reply. I have spoken to garage and they have now agreed to replace the cambelt, and I am very pleased. Not too sure whether they will be replacing the other bits you have mentioned... is it done as standard when replacing cambelt or should I specifically ask them to do it? Thanks again

How much is replaced probably depends on who is paying - if the garage are doing the minimum to help the sale I would guess they will just replace the belt but good practice is to replace the other bits as well since they also wear out and if they fail they can cause the belt to break. Maybe if they refuse to do the other bits you could offer to cover part of the cost of the parts and at least you have saved the labour costs of a future job.
