mp4wizzard Posted May 16, 2011 Posted May 16, 2011 Hi, I'm a new C5 owner (02 plate estate) and I'm very pleased with my new car............ but as with all new cars there are a few little jobs that need doing. One of them is the gas struts for the rear tailgate ...... I'm guessing they need replacing as the tailgate keeps falling down :)2 questionsWhere can I get them and is there any info on how to do the job / what needs to be done to do the job.It looks as though the roof lining needs to be removed to get at the parts??Many thanks in advance mp4wizzard or most people call me Eddiebut the forum would not let me use Eddie as the name has been "claimed" already :) Quote
kfk Posted May 16, 2011 Posted May 16, 2011 Hi Eddie, Welcome........you're lucky you managed to register with mp4wizzard.......if i had seen it i would probably have banned you before you spammed the forum with links for dodgy films http://www.citroen-owners-club.co.uk/citroen/public/style_emoticons/default/ohmy.gif . Any how in answer to your question i think you will find the only place to get those parts is your local citroen dealer, as for fitting them......disconnect them one at a time and invest in a broom handle to hold the tailgate up while your strugling to remove and refit them. Johndouglas Posted May 17, 2011 Posted May 17, 2011 I've no idea of their quality, but these may be worth comparing:http://www.tailgatestruts.com/citroen-tailgate-struts/citroen-c5-gas-struts Quote
sifaan Posted May 18, 2011 Posted May 18, 2011 you can get used struts from ebay; I replaced a bonnet strut and it was just a case of unclipping the old one and fitting in the new. there's a small clip that locks the ball-and-socket joint that needs to be released. looking at the tailgate struts for sale on ebay, it should be the same procedure. (btw I paid 7.5 pounds + 4 for postage for a pair of bonnet struts; Dealer quoted ~17 pounds each new) if you remove them (get someone to hold the tailgate open) you can check if you need to replace one or both - if it's working, you won't be able to push the strut in by hand, and if it's not working it'll slide in and out easily.
