There may be different struts depending on the year and whether hydractive suspension is fitted - seem to be 4 different part nos. at each side and mark 2 C5s may still have the same part nos. so you may not be limited to a mark 1. Your best bet is to check all the part nos. from the 2 cars - you can then use the VIN. Go on the service.citroen website and join as an other professional, member of The Citroen Owners Club and look at the free services for the parts diagrams.

A new rear strut may be about £120. If it is only the gaiter that is leaking, this and its clip are about £18. The LDS fluid is about £16 a litre. A dealer will take less than an hour to replace a strut so labour charges are not high if you do not wish to do the job.

If you do go under the car use axle stands, the suspension can drop if the height adjuster is caught, plus if depressurising it drops very low, only a few inches clearance left.

I don't even know if it has hydractive suspension, have been on ebay looking at rear axles and on filling in details they have stated that I don't have this suspension, the mechanic (I don't have a clue ) told me that he could not get a strut from citreon as they don't have any in stock and don't know when they are getting any in told me to purchase a used axle as this would be cheaper but am finding this even difficult as I cant find the exact model as I am led to believe that the petrol and diesel models differ- I am in limbo

You can look on service.citroen for the characteristics of your car (as well as the parts nos). If you provide your car model version and whether estate or hatchback on here we can also tell you if you have hydractive suspension. Have you tried a Citroen dealer yourself for the parts (take your VIN with you) ?

A sales brochure I have for September 2003 says the 2.0hdi exclusive has hydractive 3 suspension with automatic ride height adjustment. It does not have a sport button on the suspension height switches. If you look in your car handbook it will refer to the suspension and should confirm this.
