Hi please can someone help, my Diesel berlingo multistage desire, 2007 keeps cutting out, anti pollution fault comes on and yellow engine picture on dash is illuminated, will restart then cut off if I rev engine or try to drive off, this will continue for between 5 and 20 times then suddenly recover as though nothing has happened! Has done several hundred miles between incidents, AA have recovered me twice now, fault code points to low fuel pressure warning, main dealer said oh yes it's fuel filter £144 later and two days, just started playing up again, terrified there going to just keep replacing parts with no real idea what the fault is?

Has anyone else had this?

Welcome to the forum.

It could pay you to buy your own fault code reader, decent ones that give live data are available for less than £60 (eg Gendan do their own make, recently bought one as a spare to leave at a relatives and this works well). Then when it happens you could read and clear the code(s) and post it on here.

Low fuel pressure possibilities could include the fuel pressure switch is faulty, a faulty fuel pump. If there was more than one code the low fuel pressure may be a result of something else.

To read the fuel pressure though a standard code reader with live data will not work, you would need a dealer type Lexia and Chinese copies are available and some members on here have one. £144 just to replace a fuel filter is a bit much unless it included the diagnostic check, even then, they came up with the wrong answer so maybe there is a comeback there.

Hi and thanks for the reply, the first time it happened the AA came out and recorded these codes so i could take it to local garage to check out, P1092 , P1350 and P1351 local garage could find no fault and put it down to running low on fuel before it happened, second time the AA came out i think it was showing just the P1092 he said it was showing a sensor fault but thought it would be something else causing it to list that? its strange that after a while of starting and cutting out it right itself and has done several hundred miles before the the same thing happens again. thanks Allan

Welcome to the forum.

Are you getting the same fault codes or are they different ? If the fault codes have not been read this is the first thing to do since it will indicate what is wrong. A search on the P1092 fault code suggests the exhaust lambda sensors are faulty and need replacing, but I would not do this if you have not read your fault codes since it could be a waste of money.

Hi, when it first happened, a year ago, my mechanic read the computer, cannot remember the code but it was a low fuel pressure fault but the pressure was fine so he re-set the computer and we left it at that but now it has started again, exactly as central1 had it.  Was hoping for any pointers for my mechanic as to whether its a sensor fault or fuel pump fault or which is most likely. Thanks for the prompt reply

Which engine does your car have and how many miles ? Is the fuel filter change up to date or due again if it is a diesel - if due it is not a waste of money to replace it, even if it does not fix the fault since it needs doing anyway.

Hi its the 1.6 75bhp deisel, serviced last month, I am checking that the fuel filter was changed then, I think it was. Van has done 98k, I am leaning towards changing the fuel pump and sensor unless you can advise one way or the other.

First thing to check is the fuel tank filler cap. When you remove the filler cap after a run, do you hear it sucking in air ?

If the fuel tank vent is blocked then a vacuum builds up and stops the fuel flowing to the engine.

Warning, if the fuel tank vent is blocked, you can cure the problem temporarily by removing the seal on the filler cap, but you must repair the vent as the car will fail it's mot with the filler cap seal removed.

Problem went away for a couple of weeks after the mechanic cleared the fault codes, came back with a vengence today!  its a real puzzler, hopefully I can get to the bottom of it.

quick update, it finally broke down on the mechanic so he could identify which fault code was first, it was as susspected the fuel rail pressure sensor, it would not restart, then we wiggled the sensor, started, been fine for a while now, awaiting new sensor to fit.
