seefive Posted November 25, 2013 Posted November 25, 2013 No mention of glow plugs in the handbook of my 13 plate hdi160, and there doesn't seem to be a relevant light on the dashboard. Do they not exist any more? Maybe on the higher power/compression engines? Quote
paul.h Posted November 25, 2013 Posted November 25, 2013 The parts diagrams show glow plugs. To check your car you need to use your vin and look under Electric unit, Engine electricity, Pre-heating. If you have not yet registered on the service.citroen site to see the diagrams, you can do this as another professional and member of the Citroen Owners Club. You could also have a look under the bonnet if the weather warms up. The most recent C5 handbook on the service.citroen site is for 1/6/2012 on and it shows a glow plug symbol on page 37 - is your handbook a more recent version ? Quote
qman3428 Posted November 26, 2013 Posted November 26, 2013 The engine definately has glow plugs but they are not like the old style ones that you had to wait for, no more the 30 second preheat then turn it over and hope it starts. The modern HDI engine will start pretty much straight off in UK winters, If it gets very cold you might have to wait 5 seconds but that is it. Once the indicator lights on the dash are out you can turn her over. Quote
seefive Posted November 27, 2013 Author Posted November 27, 2013 Thanks for the replies Paul you are quite right - there is mention of the pre-heaters on page 37, but nothing on page 26 (instrument layout) and nothing in the index, or section on starting.I do have the 2012 edition. Glow plug warning light is shown as amber on page 37, and all amber and red lights should come on with the ignition. I have looked and looked, and cannot see a light on the dash with the "pig's tail" icon I looked under the bonnet, but cannot get a good view of the engine block - too much stuff in the way The mystery continues.. paul.h Posted November 27, 2013 Posted November 27, 2013 The glow plug light is possibly different to other warning lights in that the glowplugs come on in the ignition position (if they are needed) and the light is to tell you to start the engine when it goes off. You may have to wait until a very cold day before you see the glow plug light. It has not started to show on my C5 yet (2007 2.2 hdi). I do not think they are needed until the weather is near freezing, or maybe they are not on long enough for the light to show to tell you when to start it. Quote
Vin1100 Posted November 27, 2013 Posted November 27, 2013 The glow plugs are hidden behind the cooling chamber of egr valve, well they are on the 06 c5 anyway.. Weird that its mentioned that the pre-heat light doesnt show cos neither does mine but it is placed next to voltage gage on dash.. Quote
seefive Posted January 6, 2014 Author Posted January 6, 2014 Finally "saw the light" yesterday morning - after a heavy frost. It appears beside the fuel full marker on the left hand dial Quote
