I've been spending the afternoon reading/researching a variety of things written about a problem that's beginning to show.

My latest issue with my treasured C5 is that when you turn a hard right corner or go over a bump a knocking sound comes from the front O/S suspension.

Also the C5 estate sags at the rear every night and has uneven wear on the 2 rear tyres which I'm getting replaced this week.

This forum below (of which I'm not a member) talks about that same issue I have although it was never sorted, the guy part exchanged his car in the end.

Question is how can I fix this, and how long can I go without it needing attention?

* Replace link rods?

* Get spheres replaced?

* Get pump replaced?

Has anyone else had any experience of this issue, and possibly managed to get a solution?

Thanks guys, can't afford to replace my C5, plus it's so great for me and the family!

Knocking is probably a drop link. You may be able to detect wear in a joint with a lever, possibly with the car jacked up (raise suspension first as usual before jacking). I had one go on a C3 and once I disconnected it the joint was very loose - so as a check before buying a replacement just disconnect one end and see the joint wear.

Our C5 was dropping a bit at the rear and there was a slight leak of suspension fluid from a strut gaiter at the back. In the end the strut was replaced and the sinking ended. I had it replaced by the dealer for the MOT last year, £244 inc 1 hour labour - strut £143, seal £3, R pin £1, LDS £13.

Has the tyre uneven wear occurred whilst you have had the car so you know the history of the tyres (not moved from the front) ? If you look from behind the car are the wheels leaning in slightly at the top suggesting wear in the suspension arm bearings ?

Hi Paul,

Just had the rear tyres replaced and the fitter balanced and realigned the wheel as he said it was 2% out. Hopefully this will resolve this issue of wear although I was wondering if it had a connection through the suspension connection to the front knocking.

The mechanic looked at the drop links and said it was fine, although I did read that the system should be depresurised first! He went on to say that it may be some bearings to do with the suspension although said he did not know much about the hydromatic setup, but was not concerned.

So on conclusion, I think it's a case of see what happens and keep an eye on things.

The car performs great and the blocked fuel filter warning (anti-pollution) has disappeared for a while since putting in decent diesel!

I'm sure the suspension will have to be tackled within year, perhaps, but everything does what it's supposed to.

Thanks to you guys and other forums for easing the anxiety, I'll take you all out for a currry! Cheers.

Any suspension fault should be found at the next MOT. Thats when our C3 drop link wear was pointed out as an advisory but before this I had unsuccessfully tried to locate the source of the noise.
