I have owned my C8 exclusive for just under a year now. A lovely car I THOUGHT!! I have had the curse of the engine management light and loss of power. Anyway I got her elloys fluid tank refilled and they found some valvy type thing gone on the FAP after which she has been running like a dream. I also treated her to a good service.

Yesterday, however, while climbing some rather steep winding road I was aware of a sudden tapping noise from under the bonnet. No warning lights, no smoke, no power loss and no temperature change. A few seconds after the tapping sound was a smell of exhaust fumes in the car.

On opening the bonnet there is quite a loud tapping sound from the left side of the engine (as you look at it). There is no affect on power, just an unpleasant and intermittent exhaust fumes smell in the car.

Does that sound expensive?

If it is a chuffing sound then it could be a fuel injector seal leak. To check, I have read you can squirt some soapy water (washing up liquid) down the side of the injectors and see if it blows bubbles.

If it is low down on the engine then it could be the crankshaft pulley and the exhaust fumes may be an exhaust leak. This is from the C5 Common Problems post

21. Crankshaft pulley failure.

This has been reported on a 2.2 hdi 136 bhp engine but can happen on other engines. Symptoms are a tapping noise from low down on the engine but may initially be thought to be a worn/sticking tappet. The noise increases with engine revs. The pulley is an anti vibration type which can separate and need replacing - it is possible to fit a solid type - approx cost at a garage is £200 including a new auxiliary drive belt.

Thanks Paul, that sounds encouraging I was thinking about £900. If it turns out to be £200 she can stay on my Christmas card list!

It is definitely a loud tapping sound as opposed to a "chuffing".

The engine is a 2.2 HDi so fingers crossed.

I'll let you know the out come of her trip to the garage on Monday.

I have just returned from the garage and the mechanic spotted the problem straight away. He said it is definitely an injector problem. It it proves that one mans chuffing is another mans tapping

I'll let you know how it all pans out.

UPDATE:

Well....it turned out to be an injector failure. Regarding cost?....the total bill was 350 euros BUT that included front brake pads and the removal of all four road wheels for cleaning and greasing. So all in all not too bad.
