Andrewwood Posted April 7, 2014 Posted April 7, 2014 Hi all, newbie here with a question. I have a C5 2ltr TD 2002 estate car with 125000 milesIt,s a great car apart from poor performance I.e. Just feels flat and I have to change down gears on most hills, I think I can hear the turbo whistling, also MPG is returning no more than 30 which I think is very bad (I had a 2.2 C5 2002 a couple of years ago and there was a marked difference). Any help would be appreciated ThanksAndy Quote
Parkesie Posted April 8, 2014 Posted April 8, 2014 So many things it could be with not many clues to go on. A few simple things to check would beSplit or disconnected boost hose.Brakes binding. Get it plugged in to lexia see if any codes are coming up for dud sensors or daft readings for temp and o2 levels etc. Quote
coastline taxis Posted April 9, 2014 Posted April 9, 2014 is it a 90 or a 110 bhp if your not sure check windscreen does it say rhy or rhz Quote
Andrewwood Posted April 9, 2014 Author Posted April 9, 2014 Hi Coastline, it says RHZ in the Vin number on windscreen. I checked for binding brakes yesterday and they all are free as anything apart rom NSF which catches only very slightly indeed. I can't see any split / disconnected hoses anywhere. One point though, when I'm doing 70mph, the rev counter is only showing 2100rpm - is this right? Thanks and thanks to ParkesieAndy Quote
coastline taxis Posted April 9, 2014 Posted April 9, 2014 Yes thats about right at 70 in 5th gear. If your not getting a engine management light on when your lossing power then i think its down to 1 or 2 things mass airflow meter ( to check this unplug it and go for a drive if its working ok you should notice a serious loss of power. if the car drive just the same then thats your fault). Egr valve Take it off and clean it also clean the elbow out where the egr pipe ( held in with 2 allen keys) meets the main airflow pipe as these get really cloged up. When you do the mass airflow you might get the engine management light on but dont worry itl go off itself with a few engine starts Quote
Andrewwood Posted April 10, 2014 Author Posted April 10, 2014 Hi, thanks for reply. I tried the MAF sensor by removing air tube between it and engine and what a difference in LOSS of power! I will try to remove egr, valve tomorrow when I suss out how to remove it, it seems to be bolted to the egr cooler? If so do I have to drain coolant first, if not what would happen if I disconnected the vacuum tube fom the valve, would the engine go into limp mode or Engine management light come on? To see if there is a vacuum being producedSorry for questionsAndy Quote
coastline taxis Posted April 10, 2014 Posted April 10, 2014 The mas airflow hasnt got any pipes on it so youve unpluged the wrong bit (easily done). Its the light grey multiplug that has 4 wires that is on the black air tubing just down from the air filter housing. The egr is held in place by2 x 10mm nuts (hold egr onto exhaust manifold)2 x 10mm allen keys (under the egr cooler)2 x 10mm allen keys ( where it conects to the intake manifold)2 x water hoses. youl see black gunge everywhere at the manifold try and get as much out as you can. Scrape/wirebrush and use brake cleaner to clean the valve itself then put a bit rubber tubing ontio the egr wacum pipe and as you suck you should see the valve inside open. If it dosnt then clean it somemore if after cleaning and cleaning and then more cleaning it wont open then you might need a new one Quote
Andrewwood Posted April 12, 2014 Author Posted April 12, 2014 Oh well, here goes. I will try to remove my egr valve today - by the look of it wish me luck. Will I need new clamps on the water hoses? Thanks Quote
Johndouglas Posted April 12, 2014 Posted April 12, 2014 Will I need new clamps on the water hoses? If you don't damage the clips, they can go back on, but they could be rusty. Maybe have a jubilee clip handy. Quote
Andrewwood Posted April 12, 2014 Author Posted April 12, 2014 Hey guys, thanks very much, for the info it really helped. I did my egr valve and cooler today although is wasn't,t as bunged up as I thought it would be, it was really bad in the elbow at the main airflow pipe. All clean now and the valve works by sucking on it then snaps shut. Time will tell on the mpg, but performance seems better Quote
