koeman Posted May 25, 2014 Posted May 25, 2014 I seem to have a problem where it sounds like a fan under the bonnet is running really loud. It sounds loudest when I'm at about 30mph, when I come to a stop after about 5secs it drops off and sounds normal. I've checked oil and coolant and all levels find. Any ideas what to check? Quote
paul.h Posted May 26, 2014 Posted May 26, 2014 Welcome to the forum. It is likely the engine fan is a 2 speed fan (as well as not running) but I need to check. You will need to provide the model and engine type and size. You could see if having the air con off makes a diference since the engine fan needs to run when using the air con and unless you are in a queue or it is a hot day, I would have thought the fan would not be needed. Since the car does not have a temperature gauge, to check the engine coolant temperature and its sensor (which causes the fan to switch on/off) will need a code reader that does live data, but unless a high temperature alarm has come up it is probably ok. koeman Posted May 26, 2014 Author Posted May 26, 2014 Hi it's vtr+ 1.4 petrol No temp alarms so far. Does same with air con on or off...weord Thanks for your reply. Quote
paul.h Posted May 26, 2014 Posted May 26, 2014 The parts diagrams show a single speed fan with 4 blades or a 2 speed fan with more than 4 blades. Does the fan run all the time when the engine is running ? If so there may be a fault, possibly the temperature sender or the fan control fastened on the fan or the engine thermostat. To check would need the live data check for the coolant temperature. Quote
koeman Posted May 27, 2014 Author Posted May 27, 2014 no it doesnt run at this speed all the time, just occassionally its noisier than normal. is live data check something i can do myself? Quote
paul.h Posted May 27, 2014 Posted May 27, 2014 Does the fan always run when the engine is running (lift the bonnet to check and start the engine) ? To see live data, you need a code reader to plug in to the EOBD socket in the glovebox (behind the square panel at the left that just pulls off). We have this one from Gendan that gives live data http://www.gendan.co.uk/product_GCR25.html If you do this, have the car key out of the ignition switch before plugging the reader in, then when it says it is not communicating put the key in the switch and turn the key so the dash lights come on or start the engine. The engine fan should start when the ECT engine coolant temperature reaches about 96°C and stop when about 2°C lower. The higher speed should start above the 96°C. To erase any fault codes with the reader the engine should not be running but the dash lights on. Switch off and remove the ignition key before unplugging the reader. Your car will be still under the Citroen 3 year warranty so if there is a fault it should be repaired at no cost to yourself - have you thought about going to your nearest Citroen dealer ? Quote
koeman Posted May 28, 2014 Author Posted May 28, 2014 didnt even think about that, im useless at this. do i have to go back to the dealer bought from? or should any citroen dealer be able to help? as the one i bought from is no longer the closest. Quote
paul.h Posted May 28, 2014 Posted May 28, 2014 You should be able to go to any Citroen dealer. This is something we checked when we bought a Citroen used approved car. Still check with the dealer though since it may not apply to national chains - we once looked at a car at Evans Hallshaw and they did not provide the Citroen warranty, you had to buy one if you wanted more than 3 months. koeman Posted June 10, 2014 Author Posted June 10, 2014 its now been to the dealer and tested and no fault found. apparently its normal and probably due to the inclement weather! thanks for the help Quote
