fonzie Posted July 1, 2014 Posted July 1, 2014 I just won an auction on ebay for a 2006 model described above. I'm pretty sure that the guy selling it is a genuine person, but (this was on ebay) before bidding I made sure it was okay to test drive the car before handing over my cash, to ensure it was as he described. I just want to be sure it drives okay, doesn't burn oil, doesn't overheat etc and no dash lights are coming on. Which is how he described it. He did say there is a noise sometimes when you press the clutch, I'm prepared for it needing a new one, but he seems to think it could be a thrust bearing. Apart from the above, is there anything else I should be aware of with this model ?, I've had a 2 litre hdi in the past so know how the cars should feel and drive. Quote
paul.h Posted July 2, 2014 Posted July 2, 2014 Have a look in the Common Problems pinned post in this section for some things to check. On the 1.6 hdi the turbo often fails at low mileage so you need to check it has had low mileage frequent oil and filter changes. Ideally you would remove the ducting to it and check if the impeller has a lot of play indicating the bearings are worn - or at worst allow for the cost of replacing it or fitting a new cartridge to it (the impeller parts). If unable to do this, on starting and accelerating the engine look for a plume of smoke from the exhaust or any unusual noises when accelerating but the smoke could be masked by a dpf filter in the exhaust (also check the service history of the dpf - should be eolys fluid top up and maybe dpf replacement about 80k miles). Ask if the dpf has been removed (or the innards drilled out) since if so it would not pass the MOT. Quote
fonzie Posted July 2, 2014 Author Posted July 2, 2014 Thank you for your reply. The car has done 125,000 so I suspect it must have been serviced on a regular basis, it is still in daily use. I can't see the owner allowing me to remove a pipe to check the turbo, but I'll try. I'll also ask for info on the dpf. I am going to go for a drive in it, so will try and remove the pipe then, will a screwdriver remove the pipe to the turbo ? Quote
paul.h Posted July 2, 2014 Posted July 2, 2014 The turbo can get very hot in use so it is best not to touch it if the car has been used recently. Probably you will need to rely on watching for smoke from the exhaust. Quote
fonzie Posted July 4, 2014 Author Posted July 4, 2014 Well, I bought the car and am very pleased with it. The owner seemed a genuine guy, allowed me to test drive it before handing over my cash. It needed 2 front tyres (not mentioned in his ad) but at less than £900 for a 2006 plate 1.6 hdi I'm happy. The car does have a few problems :- I'll post questions regarding these id their own threads. Quote
Boonaldo08 Posted July 19, 2014 Posted July 19, 2014 if i were you i would change the oil and filter, block off the egr valve and leave it plugged in, and just so i could sleep at night - id change the turbo oil feed pipe and remove the gauze at the bottom of the feed pipe. i would also go down the route of getting the dpf deleted from the system as they are an even bigger pain on these engines. I had a 1.6 and everything seemed to go at once - clutch - fixed, dpf - deleted, finally the turbo went (92k) which i rebuilt and put back on along with new sump inlet pipe , oil feed, etc to no avail, as the oil galleries were blocked. if you want this engine to last change the oil every 6k and do the above - or at least start to !! paul.h Posted July 20, 2014 Posted July 20, 2014 Welcome to the forum. Some good advice there. As a reminder though this forum can not recommend removal of the dpf. Due to changes to the MOT test this year, the dpf should not be removed from a car if one was orginally installed on it when made and this is now checked at the MOT - if it has been removed the car should fail. I can imagine MOT checks for the egr valve will come in the future since this also affects the emissions - recycling exhaust gases is supposed to cool the combustion to reduce nitrogen oxides in the exhaust.
