locks11 Posted July 19, 2014 Posted July 19, 2014 Hi, I own a citroen berlingo van, i took it off the road for a few months, the battery went flat, i renewed it and it would not start!! I took it to a diagnostics garage, they played abot with it for over 1 month, with no results, i found a mobile tech who fixed the problem within 5 minutes, seems the ECU lost comms with the DPI.Anyways since then the van would run fine & cut out whilst driving or on tickover, it judders and cuts out, rev counter drops dead, engine management light comes on, leave it for 5 minutes and it will re-start and run ok with no engine management light for a mile or so and cut out again. Now it may start or may not, when you turn on the ignition, you will either hear the fuel system powering up but sometimes it won,t, power up!!!!The fault code reader comes back with no faults found, Ive heard a solinoid elecrical type noise from the underbonet fuse box, i changed that to no avail, Ive also changed the Crank sensor, now im hearing a noise comming from around the throttle body when the ignition is swicthed on! ANYONE WITH ANY IDEAS??? I was going to buy a Throttle body, but thought i would give you boys a try!!! Regards Jeff Locks11. Quote
paul.h Posted July 19, 2014 Posted July 19, 2014 Welcome to the forum. These are things you could check without spending any money, but I am surprised there were no fault codes stored after the engine light came on. - condition of air filter /spark plugs / ignition coil pack- MAP sensor on inlet manifold for blockage- check fuel injectors for corrosion on the electrics - on the 1.4 petrol C3 water would drip on these and cause them to fail- clean the throttle body plate since carbon build up can cause poor tickoverThe ignition coil pack is a known failure on some cars so could be suspect - check its connections where it contacts the spark plug tops for any corrosion. locks11 Posted July 21, 2014 Author Posted July 21, 2014 Hi Thanx for the advice, I will have a look and let you know whats found if anything??? I just don,t understand why sometimes on ignition the fuel pump powers up and the engine will run and other times no noise and non starter. The engine managment light comes on when it cuts out, but after 5 mins if the engine starts it goes out and has no faults are stored. Theres a noise around the multiplug area of the throttle body / ignition coil pack when pump don,t power up!!! Regards Jeff. Quote
locks11 Posted July 22, 2014 Author Posted July 22, 2014 UPDATE, All seems fine, nothing out of the norm with the parts you stated. Switch on Ignition and theres a humming noise comming from under the throttle body black cover, I took it off all seems clean & dry, I cleaned the contacts & replaced the cover, but it still has the same noise, I think i will change it!!!! Regards Jeff. Quote
paul.h Posted July 22, 2014 Posted July 22, 2014 A new throttle body may be over £200. I did a search on throttle body noise and a humming noise from the stepper motor may be normal but your cutting out problems could be a sign of a problem with it. Have you asked a Citroen dealer or specialist for advice or price to sort it, just in case it is not the throttle body ? Quote
locks11 Posted July 26, 2014 Author Posted July 26, 2014 Hi Ive bought a used throttle body from e-bay, Still awaiting delivery....I have a feeling its something deeper, I think its ECU issue, I put the fault code reader on it whilst i had it running, Seems loss of feed to ECU when engine cuts out!!! Intermitant loss of feed will also be the cause of the pump not powering up on ignition & loss of spark when it cuts out!!!!Any ideas???? Quote
paul.h Posted July 26, 2014 Posted July 26, 2014 Have you tried the spare key in case it is an immobiliser problem ? The transponder which detects the key is located around the ignition switch and does not cost much if it is faulty. Quote
locks11 Posted July 27, 2014 Author Posted July 27, 2014 Yeah all the obvious things have been checked, the chip in the key only comes into action when you start the vehicle, you canmove it away from the areal aqround the lock once the engine is running with no issues....This has an intermittant fault, it seems to loose the feed to the ECU which in turn causes the vehicle to stop, but if you give it 5 minutes, it will probly re-start & run for a short while and cut out again!!!!! You know if its going to start coz u can hear the fuel pump pressuring up, if no sound, No start!!!The question is:- Dose either the ignition coil pack or the throttle body send signals to the ECU, which could cause it to loose its feed???? Regards Jeff..... Quote
