doctorm Posted September 30, 2006 Posted September 30, 2006 :P My 51 reg 1.8 SX had front brake squeal for some time. After having the front disc pads replaced, the squeal has returned just as bad as before.Any thoughts? Quote
kfk Posted September 30, 2006 Posted September 30, 2006 Are you sure its the front brakes squealing and not the rear? It isnt uncommon for the rear brakes to be the cause of the problem. If you remove your rear pads take a look and see how they have worn. On many C5's when checked thay have worn tapered from top to bottom. The cause of this is a build up of corrosion between the rear brake caliper and the rear suspension arm. Obviously to cure this the caliper has to be removed and the corrosion cleaned up. Sounds easy.....but unfortunately, Citroen in there wisdom decided that the bolts securing the calipers to the arm should have loctite applied along there length, this makes a simple job into one you wish you hadnt started! Seriously though, first check should be your rear brakes....if you have a friendly mot test station ask if they will put your car on the brake rollers so you can hear which end is squealing. Quote
doctorm Posted October 4, 2006 Author Posted October 4, 2006 Thanks kfk, Had it put on the rollers and rear brakes confirmed. Having them replaced Thursday. Will let you know the result. Quote
Johndouglas Posted October 4, 2006 Posted October 4, 2006 Ask about the shape of the old pads. If they are wedged shape, your mechanic needs to go further and remove the corrosion which might be between the calliper and arm. Just to change the pads will be false economy. The squeel will be back in no time. Quote
doctorm Posted October 5, 2006 Author Posted October 5, 2006  Many thanks for all your thoughts. Rear brakes cleaned and re-set. Hopefully, that will be it for a while. Quote
