Hi

My 2008, C5 has a clunk as I set off (think its from the O/S/F) and occasionally when turning slowly. The car has just been in for a new steering rack and the garage had a pry bar in the various suspension joints but failed to find anything amiss (noise was there before the new rack). As it happens when setting off forwards (or say when pressing the throttle at 15-20mph in 2nd) I assume it's when the car lifts at the front, so I was thinking it might be the drop link, however it doesn't look too old ?

I had to replace a noisy anti roll bar drop link on a C3 and you noticed that knocked as the car went over small bumps at low speed. It was an advisory at the MOT but once one end was undone the play in the joints was obvious. It was easy enough to replace so you could try undoing one end to check it since without doing this it is not easy to detect the wear.

I had a droplink separate when I was removing it from the anti-rollbar, hate to think what would have happened if it had separated at speed and not when it was being replaced, it had been put down as an advisory as a little play........ droplinks would be the first thing i would check..........

Hi

I removed the o/s drop link (which didn't look very old) but couldn't feel any play in the joints. I tried a few 'set offs' with it disconnected from the anti roll bar and the noise was still there. The car needs mot'ing in January so I think I will book it in early and get them to check it.

Another possibility could be the brake pads. The rear ones on our 2007 C5 and our previous 2004 C5 clunk when first applied or if going from reverse to forward and using the brakes - particularly after they have been removed and all the dirt cleaned off so they are free to move. For the rear ones an additional shim is available that fits over the top of the pads to prevent this on the 2001 to 2008 C5.

Well I took the car for its Mot, which it passed !

Despite me pointing out the noise and the tested having a drive and looking a bit closer, he couldn't find anything a miss! The front discs and pads were advised, I will replace them tomorrow hoping to find a very loose pad or something brake related.

Update, The garage found a loose engine mount (near the cam belt) with a missing bolt, hence the clunk when setting off !

Don't know if the cam belt has been changed, but that's about the only reason for loosening that mount?
