TB9 Posted May 23, 2015 Posted May 23, 2015 Hi, I'm a new member seeking advice on my C5 Mk.II VTR Diesel.I've been getting a fault code P0001 which sometimes puts the car into limp mode.I realise a lot of people have searched for the meaning of this code but it seems without too much success. It refers to the fuel system and I wondered if I may have a low pressure fuel pump problem. There was no 'ticking' from the tank area when first switching on so I thought I had found my problem.I took the sender unit out of the tank but there is no fuel pump in there, just a cylindrical filter connected toa tube then to the outlet on the top. I have the Haynes manual that refers to an in-tank pump but is the VTR model different?Has anyone encountered this one before. Advice greatly appreciated.Thanks. Quote
paul.h Posted May 23, 2015 Posted May 23, 2015 Welcome to the forum. Which engine do you have since some have an in tank pump and others do not ?What code reader are you using and are there any starting problems and how many miles ago was the fuel filter replaced ?Does your code reader give live data and the fuel pressure to allow you to see if it is low ? TB9 Posted May 23, 2015 Author Posted May 23, 2015 Hi paul.hthanks for the rapid response. My engine is the 138HP 2.0 double overhead cam DW10BTED4 engine code RHR.My code reader is a cheap Autel. The car starts and runs perfectly until just occasionallythe MIL comes on. Usually it carries running fine but rarely it will go into limp. I can usuallyclear the code with the code reader and carry on but once in limp mode it could mean afair wait at the roadside. No live data from my cheapie Autel though. If I can get some driving done I should be able toread 'Freeze Frame' data which may give fuel pressure but as I've recently cleared codes thereis no data stored yet.I replaced the fuel filter recently which cured the stream of air bubbles visible in the fuel line fromthe filter housing to the high pressure pump.I hoped that was my salvation but the car stopped againa couple of days ago. It's going fine again now but I know it will recur. Thanks for your interest. Quote
paul.h Posted May 24, 2015 Posted May 24, 2015 What year is your car ? A look on the parts diagrams shows your engine does not have a pump in the tank. It may pay to have the fault code read on a Lexia or another Citroen specific code reader since a search indicates P0001 can be used differently by manufacturers and may refer to a fuel volume problem but on another forum the fault on a C4 Picasso was fixed by replacing the engine fusebox. On the C5 Technical section is a pinned Diagnostic topic of some members who will help others. If you are having to wait for the engine to cool down to reset a code then if not the fusebox, it could be something like a camshaft sensor but probably not the crankshaft sensor. These can start to fail as they get warm and then be ok when they cool down. A failed camshaft sensor may put the car in limp mode (we had this on a C3 but it gave camshaft sensor fault codes) but the crank one would likely stop the engine. Quote
TB9 Posted May 24, 2015 Author Posted May 24, 2015 Hi again, My car is a 55 registered 2005.I had gathered that this P0001 code is a bit of a red herring.I'll seek out a better diagnosis hoping that will help narrow things down a bit.On this last 'limp' episode it happened on the way out to dinner with friends. We diverted to the nearest restaurant we could walk to while the cargathered it's senses but late in the evening it still wouldn't go properly. We were towed home. The next morning the situation was still the sameso I thought I would get someone in the drivers seat to try to rev. over 3000 while I pumped the primer bulb. The problem cleared while I was demonstrating what I wanted them to do so I didn't learn anything there.I have read of many owners with a similar problem getting main agent diagnosis followed by hefty repair costs only to find the problem stillreturned a while later. I'll check out the thread you mentioned, Thanks. Quote
