Neil54 Posted June 4, 2015 Posted June 4, 2015 Does anyone know if it is possible to change the O/S driveshaft oil seal without removing the CV joint from the hub.For example, remove track rod end, seperate bottom ball joint, swing hub outwards pulling driveshaft out of gearbox. 2003 relay 2.0HDI Thank you for your help in advance. Neil54 Posted June 20, 2015 Author Posted June 20, 2015 In a nutshell no. with an addendum. The driveshaft needs to come out about 5" to clear the gearbox.I managed this by using spring compressors and disconnecting the suspension strut. Disconnecting the bottom swivel. undoing CV joint at hub.I extracted the driveshaft complete with bearing carrier as the bearing wouldn't come out of the carrier as designed. If the vehicle was new and everything came apart as it should, it may be possible not to have to disconnect the outer CV joint. I caught 1.5L of gearbox oil. I expect to put back a little more to allow for what had seeped out.I just now need to find the filler hole. Thank you. Quote
paul.h Posted June 20, 2015 Posted June 20, 2015 The filling and level plugs differ for the different model of gearbox. 1. MLGU 5 speed manual gearboxOn the top is a vent hole/neck for filling. Do not use the level plug on the side of the differential to fill or top up due to the new engine angle. 2. BVM ML5T since production 15580263Use the filling and level plug on the side of the differential. 3. BVM MEFill through the reversing lamp switch hole on the top, check the level using the level dipstick on the differential. 4. BVM MG5TThis might have a filling and level dipstick or a filling and level plug with a square hole for a key (may be on the differential but hard to tell from the parts picture). Quote
Neil54 Posted June 20, 2015 Author Posted June 20, 2015 Thank you for your information.I spent an hour looking for a fill plug without success. There is a white nylon device on the diff with three wires coming out of the top. It is secured with an 11mm head bolt.I removed the bolt but it wasn't for coming out.Tomorrow I will disconnect the wires and see if the reversing lights go out, if it is a switch I would be happier to play around with it. paul.h Posted June 20, 2015 Posted June 20, 2015 Reverse switches are on top of the gearbox, the one on the differential may be a speedometer drive and best left alone. There is also a MLUC 5 speed gearbox on the Relay 2 model and that is filled as the MLGU box in 1. above - ie through the top vent (it looks as if there is a plug in it near the reversing switch). Neil54 Posted June 21, 2015 Author Posted June 21, 2015 The white nylon device turned out to be the speedo sensor. The oil was already at this level. Quote
paul.h Posted June 22, 2015 Posted June 22, 2015 Neil54 has written a new topic on how the oil was topped up, through the reversing light switch hole on top of the gearbox, adding the amount drained plus a bit more http://www.citroen-owners-club.co.uk/citroen/topic/22793-20l-hdi-gearbox-oil/?do=findComment&comment=84524 Quote

paul.h Posted August 25, 2015 Posted August 25, 2015 First option for the seals would be a Citroen dealer, then you will get the right parts assuming the replacement gearbox was the same as the original. This topic for a Saxo has a link to a possible supplier on ebay http://www.citroen-owners-club.co.uk/citroen/topic/23014-drive-shaft-oil-seal/?do=findComment&comment=85540 Quote
