Hi, just bought a 2001 C5 HDI SX .estate,      (1997 cc engine 110)

Had "antipollution Fault" flash up in centre console, along with the little engine icon and service light on the dashboard.

Taken it into a seriously Main dealer in Limoges France and they tell me that there are no error codes relating to antipollution faults, in fact it is not possible because the 8 valve engine which is fitted does not have an FAP filter

They then charged me  Â£150 for the pleasure !!

The only comfort i have from the situation is that they did tell me there are NO other error codes

However the error messages have returned !!!!

has anyone got any ideas please ?

regards

Keith.

Welcome to the forum.

The anti pollution message and the engine management light coming on just mean there is a fault detected that may affect the exhaust emissions. It does not just refer to the exhaust FAP (dpf) and as you note, your car does not have a dpf. A fault code will have been stored until it was deleted using a code reader and it would give a good indication of what is wrong. It could be a faulty sensor and possibilities include a blocked fuel filter, an air flow meter fault (if disconnecting it does not alter the running then it could be faulty - try cleaning it with carb cleaner before replacing), a cam shaft sensor fault, possibly a crank shaft sensor fault but this would likely stop the engine, a speed sensor fault, an egr valve fault, a sensor connector fault, a leak in the vacuum hoses to the various sensors, and the list goes on. So without reading the fault codes you could spend a lot of money replacing various parts until you found the right one.

Thank you Paul.H and Madmadmax for your suggestions, they open a number of areas for further investigation.

one point that concerns me is, the MAIN (and i mean Main) dealer told me there were no other error codes on the system;   is there any merit in them telling me porkies?

however i take your point about cleaning what is cleanable on the engine,

My only problem with that is, as with so many C5's,  the owners manual (book with any useful information in it) has gone walkies, so i am desperately trying to locate a correct one before i go wading into the engine like a gorilla.

I am an engineer, and consider myself to be pretty competent, but i do like a book of words to consult now & again.

one other thing that does ring bells is, the comment that Madmadmax made about pressing the gas pedal & nothing happening--------is that indicative of a particular problem? and could you possible elaborate

many thanks in advance

The Citroen handbook for the car does not give much maintenance info. Sometimes people leave them in a drawer under one of the front seats. A Haynes manual is worth getting for the maintenance/servicing work and from ebay you can get the Citroen service box manual on 3 dvds to put on your pc. A low cost code reader is unlikely to work on your car being a diesel pre 2004 so you could consider a Chinese Lexia copy to use on a lap top, again from ebay or easydiagnostics.
