robpace333 Posted June 13, 2015 Posted June 13, 2015 Hi everyonejust bought my Citroen Xsara 2.0 HDI 2002 as a work car that is replacing my trusty old 2000 1.9 D Xsara that has lasted me 7 years without much trouble.I've got a problem already with the replacement . It's got 92000 I think genuine miles on the clock with stamped up Service history up 75000 miles a couple of years ago . Drove it home 120 miles after buying it and it felt nice and tight and drove lovely , starting and stopping a few times on the way home . The blower has a problem , and only works on high speed occasionally , but when it does the Air Con and heating work OK . I have my own mechanics who said it sounds like it is the Multi plug which is an easy fix . Anyway , today I thought I'd give it a clean as it was parked up for quite a while and covered in Bird S..T !! The engine was left running on tick over for over half an hour with the Air Con on full , and when I finished I went to take it for a little spin . Within 50 yards the engine cut out , so pushed it home and it now just turns over without firing . About an hour later , it did fire but cut out again within a second !!Any ideas ?Thanks Rob Quote
paul.h Posted June 14, 2015 Posted June 14, 2015 Welcome to the forum. The blower only working on one speed is likely to be the blower speed control resistor pack that needs replacing. If a replacement fails in a short time then the blower may also need replacing. When the engine cut out did the engine management light come on - if so a fault code will be stored which will give a good indication of what is at fault. Being a pre 2004 diesel you will find low cost code readers are not likely to work on the car so a dealer Lexia or chinese copy of one will be needed. The copy ones are available from ebay for around £60 - 100. easydiagnostics also sell them. They are installed on a lap top. Without the diagnostic check it will be a hit and miss attempt to find out what is wrong but you could look under the bonnet for anything obvious and at the service history and see when the fuel filter was last changed and make sure there is fuel in the tank. Other possibilities could include a sensor fault such as the crankshaft sensor, or a fuel pump fault (see if the car will run using something such as easy start), etc. If you are in the RAC/AA/etc you could call them out and see if they can get the car going. If you are in contact with the previous owner you could ask them if there were any problems. Quote
robpace333 Posted June 14, 2015 Author Posted June 14, 2015 Thanks for the reply Paul .The engine management light did come on .one thing that I can't remember is when I turn the key in the ignition to let it do its checks ? and let the Heater Plugs warm up , all the lights to the right of the Speedo and Rev Counter go out and I think the EML orange light to the left also went out before starting the engine . After this fault , the right hand side lights go out as normal , but the EML stays on . I can't remember if it stayed on or went out with the others before starting ! Quote
paul.h Posted June 14, 2015 Posted June 14, 2015 The EML should not go off when the car is started until the engine has been running for a few seconds so it has checked everything is working normally. Since the EML came on originally when the engine was running there will be a fault code stored and if you can not spot anything obviously wrong you will need to have a diagnostic check to find out what is wrong. Quote
robpace333 Posted June 15, 2015 Author Posted June 15, 2015 Thinking about it now Paul , I think the EML light only came on when the engine cut out , and not when the engine was running. Quote
paul.h Posted June 15, 2015 Posted June 15, 2015 If the eml came on at the same time as the engine cut out then it is probable a fault code is stored. When you turn the ignition on can you hear the fuel pump in the tank running ? Quote
robpace333 Posted June 17, 2015 Author Posted June 17, 2015 I'm working away from home until tomorrow so will have a listen then. Do you know if parts are the same as my old 1.9 Diesel non turbo Xsara (2000) that still runs perfectly so I may be able to swap parts Quote
paul.h Posted June 17, 2015 Posted June 17, 2015 Best way to check is to look on the Citroen parts diagrams using the VIN (VIS) of both cars. This is a free service if you register as another professional and a member of the Citroen Owners Club http://service.citroen.com/do/changerParametres Quote
robpace333 Posted June 17, 2015 Author Posted June 17, 2015 Had my mechanics look at it today Paul and there was diesel pressure . Diagnostics didn't show any codes and they gave the High Pressure Pump a little tap with a hammer and it started and has run OK until they left . There going back tomorrow to fit new Fuel Filter incase it sucked some crap through . What's your thoughts ? Quote
robpace333 Posted June 17, 2015 Author Posted June 17, 2015 That should have said there was no diesel pressure ! Quote
paul.h Posted June 17, 2015 Posted June 17, 2015 Maybe a valve in the pump had stuck and tapping it with a hammer freed it. It will pay to carry a hammer in the car in case it happens again. You might want to check the old filter for bits of metal in case the fuel lift pump in the fuel tank is wearing out. Quote
robpace333 Posted June 20, 2015 Author Posted June 20, 2015 Just got home from working away from home for a week and car is now running and driving fine again . The mechanic changed the fuel filter and said it was very dirty but there was no metal in it . Filter housing was cleaned and a little hammer is now on board !Thanks for the replies Paul. Quote
robpace333 Posted June 21, 2015 Author Posted June 21, 2015 Think this could have been a bad buy !!Engine is now running OK and been on a 10 mile drive . Everything OK until I got home and noticed air bubbles and water coming out of the plastic thermostat housing . Just replaced the thermostat but hasn't cured the problem . Head Gasket ?If so is it worth repairing and roughly what would the cost be .it's a shame as everything else seems OK now ! Quote
robpace333 Posted June 21, 2015 Author Posted June 21, 2015 Panic over . Paper gasket was missing from Plastic Thermostat Housing ! Quote
robpace333 Posted June 22, 2015 Author Posted June 22, 2015 Well , it completed its first 100 Mile return with only one fault , well two as I already knew I need to get the Heater blower repaired as it only works when it wants on high speed .Drivers side electric window was a bit temperamental since I bought the car last week . It went down as it should do , but would only come up a bit at a time even with the up button pressed on all the time , so I've been pushing the up button on and off until it gets to the top and is shut. This morning it worked perfectly up and down so I was happy that it sorted itself out . Now it doesn't work at all up or down !!!! Any ideas ? Quote
paul.h Posted June 22, 2015 Posted June 22, 2015 The window switch may need its contacts cleaning or there could be a break in the wiring between the door and body. Also see if there is a fuse listed in the handbook. I had the switch problem on a Saab and used a temporary 12 volt supply to the switch connector that went to the driver's window until I cleaned it out. This also proved the motor and wiring without having to remove the door card. I also did this as a one off on a Picasso after a maxi fuse failed and cut all power to the car. Quote
robpace333 Posted June 22, 2015 Author Posted June 22, 2015 Cheers Paul , I'll have a look tomorrow .Quite happy with the MPG though . Drove down from Peterborough ( 120 miles ) doing about 75 to 80 all the way and then down to Chichester and back on windy roads and it did 51 MPG ! Quote
paul.h Posted June 22, 2015 Posted June 22, 2015 If you dropped the speed a bit to 65 to 70 mph you may have got 55 to 60 mpg and saved about £1.20. Quote
robpace333 Posted June 23, 2015 Author Posted June 23, 2015 Must be something to do with the wires to the door . Gave them a wobble and it's working again . Quote
