lou74 Posted September 10, 2015 Posted September 10, 2015 Hi Sorry if this has been answered before. I am new to this forum and am looking at purchasing a C3 Auto Diesel 1.4 e-HDI VTR+ EGS 2012 model My main reason for this is for the fuel economy nothing else seems to compare to the MPG published. Having said that i don't trust the published MPG stats which are Urban mpg78.5 mpgExtra Urban mpg88.3 mpgAverage mpg83.1 mpg I do 50 miles a day 5 days a week so 250 a week ! a mix of motorway, dual carriageway at 70 mph and urban. on a roundtrip probably 30 miles is high speed (70 to 75 mph) and 20 miles is urban with some stop and start. My question to other C3 auto diesel drivers is what MPG could i reasonably expect ? I'd be happy with 65+ is this achievable ? Any other things i need to be wary of this model ? I've never owned a diesel or a citroen before ! Thanks for any help Quote
paul.h Posted September 29, 2015 Posted September 29, 2015 Welcome to the forum. With the recent news on VW diesels and emission testing it is highlighting that in practice you will not get the official mpg values in real life. This probably applies to most recent cars where the official values are generated in lab conditions, possibly with mods to help aerodynamics and fuel efficiency, never mind VWs software. However, it may allow you to compare one car against another to see which may use less fuel. With your driving as listed you should expect to get decent fuel economy provided you drive smoothly (no fast get aways/stops), not too many hills, keep your speed down - doing 75 mph may use 5 to 10% more fuel than 65 mph. We have a C4 115 bhp 1.6 hdi with a 6 speed manual gearbox and the official figures are 64/83/74 mpg urban/extra urban/combined. Its use may on average be similar to yours and on long motorway runs does about 67 mpg but has averaged about 61 mpg over the last 7000 miles according to the trip computer. There is also a C3 2010 1.4 vti 95 bhp petrol with 5 speed gearbox in the family which according to the trip computer seems to average about 38 mpg on mostly short trips but if I do a long motorway trip with a town bit at the end it is about 48 mpg - the official figures are 36.7/57.6/47.9 mpg - so it seems to be doing similar to the official figures apart from the extra urban value. So if these comparisons help, you may expect around 70 mpg. The town driving is usually the bit that dramatically increases fuel use and a car with stop/start may help this but I suspect at possibly higher maintenance costs in the life of the car. The auto egs models also seem to have good fuel economy but this could be at the expense of higher maintenance costs. So if buying an older car the maintenance costs need to be considered since these can be much higher than fuel savings. When looking at cars you could look at the trip computer values but it could be biased if the car has been doing a lot of short trips such as being moved around by a dealer. With the engine running, push the button on the end of the wiper stalk a few times and it will go through the various computer pages - one will be the trip average mpg since the last reset of that page (done by holding in the button), one will be the current mpg over a short distance, the other will be miles left in the fuel tank at the current mpg.
