CITRON C5 2.0 HDI VTR SALOON 2008 ELECTRICS PROBLEMS RESOLVED...

Dear Citroen drivers, I am new to this site but I feel I should share information with you about and issue I've had for weeks since buying my C5.

Having driven the car straight after buying it in a private sale, I braked and the 'Engine Oil Pressure Too Low' warning came on along with the usual Anti-Pollution, ESP etc. The car cut out and I had to stop! I knew there were some things that had to e sorted by my local garage but having read on this site, and others, about the related warnings I followed low-cost maintenance myself (I'm a teacher not a mechanic but I know enough about cars). Today, I purchased a new heavy duty battery and hey presto, no more warning lights, engine cut outs and tons of mysery! So easy to change, no procedures, just disconnect the negative terminal then the positive, remove old battery, insert new battery, connect positive then negative. Ensure everything is safe and secure. No need to recode anything at all. Car should start after a couple of turns then run for 10-20 miles to charge. I drove mine for 50 trouble-free miles today without a hiccup. I knew there was a difference when the petrol gauge moved up another 1/4 tank and the consumption changed.

The guy I bought the car from said a new sender had been fitted  and not to let the gauge run below 1/4 full - very odd! The STOP warnings and cut out came randomly, some days none then 4-5 in 10 mins, usually when slowing down, after being sat in traffic or changing up - very random. It even happened on a straight run - PAIN! The worrying thing is that I had to pull over to restart the car, which did every time after restarting. I think this is very dangerous on fast roads with lots of traffic.

I still get a P1351 code on my hand held diagnostic tool and I'm prepared to change the glow plugs, if necessary, but I have cleaned fuses, relays, connections, earth leads etc. etc. etc. I'm going to keep checking the P1351 code and clearing it daily to see if the ECU will clear itself after a 'cycle'.

I hope this helps with any of your anti-pollution/warning lights and engine STOP warning signs. I know the fuse box is a potential issue on the Citroens too, but I would go for a new battery in the first instance, mine was 6 years old and the terminals were showing signs of corrosion.

Welcome to the forum.

A low battery voltage can give odd electrical problems and should be the first thing to check so thank you for your topic.

I have moved the topic in to a subsection since ones outside of one do not show after a few days.

Don't know whether this is the right place to post this but, being older than most members I assume, I was brought up to check battery levels every few months. One can usually "unseal" batteries to get at the filler caps and check, topping up with distilled water (obtainable from fridge/freezer ice etc.) and you might, like me, find that your battery lasts for nearly 10 years!
