welshspringer Posted February 13, 2016 Posted February 13, 2016 Hi I have a 2004 2.0 ltr hdi. Have purchased a (from a reputable dealer - I'm axle specialists) new axle (recon) because original axle was making a melodious BOING when encountering any uneven surface. New axle fitted - problem still making the same noise, but not quite so bad.Has anyone encountered this problem , if so, I would appreciate any comments PLEASE. Quote
paul.h Posted February 13, 2016 Posted February 13, 2016 Welcome to the forum. It might be due to a rear load sensing valve. have a look at this topic http://www.berlingoforum.co.uk/thread-1366.html Quote
welshspringer Posted February 13, 2016 Author Posted February 13, 2016 Thaks for the info, will pass it on to the garage Monday. Where is the load sensing valve located. Have tried following link but for some reason follow on is blocked. Quote
paul.h Posted February 13, 2016 Posted February 13, 2016 A search came up with the possibility the load sensing valve (rear brake compensator valve) just needs a new spring for £22 http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Citroen-Berlingo-Brake-Compensator-Load-Proportioning-Sensing-Valve-Spring/222000945358?_trksid=p2141725.c100338.m3726&_trkparms=aid%3D222007%26algo%3DSIC.MBE%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D20150313114020%26meid%3De99d62541a4e4e5598eda78c5bd26188%26pid%3D100338%26rk%3D2%26rkt%3D12%26sd%3D221582091213 Or maybe the existing spring needs greasing http://www.berlingoforum.co.uk/thread-2502.html This includes a picture of the valve on the rear axle http://www.berlingoforum.co.uk/thread-3635.html According to Citroen's procedures, to adjust the spring length the van is put on a 4 post lift, the height of the back measured above the ground (wheels must still be on the floor), the front and rear brake pressure measured and then the spring length adjusted so that the rear pressure is correct against a value on a graph. Once adjusted the pressure measurement tool is removed and the brakes are bled in case air has got in to the brakes. If the van does not have abs it is a bit more complicated needing the van weight to be calculated and then a load is applied to the rear and the pressures compared to a label on the bulkhead. Quote
welshspringer Posted February 15, 2016 Author Posted February 15, 2016 Thanks for the HELP, Spent a couple of hours this AM in the garage checking items such as shock aborbers as per instructions from company who supplied the axle, Then went down the route of investigating the sensor / spring. Could see nothing which would indicate a problem with the spring, we could apply movement of the suspension by physically lifting and dropping the vehicle, still could not find how the noise was happening until the spring was moved and supporte by a piece of cloth. Applied movement again and hey presto, noise had GONE! Drove a few mile no noise until I hit a pothole. Needless to say new spring ordered. Thanks again for the info, NO need to replace the axle (AGAIN, I HOPE) perhaps there was no need to purchase the axle originally, If only I had written on the members forum before. AN expensive mistake. :D Quote
paul.h Posted February 15, 2016 Posted February 15, 2016 Thankyou for getting back to us, I hope the new spring fixes the problem. The Berlingo site in the links might be worth joining, there seems to be a lot of good info in it. Quote
welshspringer Posted February 24, 2016 Author Posted February 24, 2016 Thankyou for getting back to us, I hope the new spring fixes the problem. The Berlingo site in the links might be worth joining, there seems to be a lot of good info in it.Yes the spring was the problem, much cheaper fix @ £22.00.Than a new axle @ £250 plus delivery plus bearings plus fixing - total £600.00As I said an expensive mistake, but done after being diagnosed @ Citroen dealer. Thanks for the help. Quote
welshspringer Posted March 1, 2016 Author Posted March 1, 2016 The citroen saga continued. After the fitting the spring, decided to have a nice liesurely country drive to Llandeilo over the Brecon Beacons. On the way I noticed a knock emanating from the rear (please not the axle) Coming home we encountered the road works on the Beacons (approx 4 miles of rough road) by the time we found a smooth surface there had devloped a tremendous knocking from the rear. To the garage following day for investigations, nothing loose tools secure, after some considerable prodding the only area giving a slight knock was the off side rear shocker which seemed to be in good condition. To evaluate I sat in the car whilst the mechanic examined underneath whilst I bounced around to make the knock which disapeared once the shock was held. A new shock fitted and Cireon is whole again. The car seems to be able to make noises which confound an experience mechanic. Quote
