Hi there - a newbie to the forum, wondering if the problem I'm having is a well-known issue or something really esoteric...

When I switch on the ignition on my C5 VTR+ HDi I get a message stating "Oil level measurement invalid". The message disappears after a few seconds and everything is OK. I've repeatedly checked the oil levels in the engine - no evident problems there - but the message still persists.

I've taken the car to my local dealership to have this fixed on 3 separate occasions now. They have tried everything from replacing the sensor to upgrading the engine software. This latter approach seems to resolve the issue for about 4 weeks, and then the problem suddenly resurfaces.

I'm not a high-mileage driver (...rarely do more than 1k miles a month) and when the car is at home it's parked on the flat, so I'm at a total loss to know what is going on here. It would seem that my dealership is similarly confused..!

Has anyone else had the same problem - and if so have you managed to get it fixed? Any tips/tricks would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to the forum.

What year is your C5 and which engine does it have ?

Possibly the level sensor wiring or electrical connector is faulty. As long as you keep checking the oil level with the dipstick there is nothing to really worry about. On our latest C4 Citroen have stopped fitting a level sensor so you have to revert to manually checking the level. The sensor is probably at the back of the engine so not easy to access without going underneath but it could be removed and dipped in oil to see if it works. If you have hydractive suspension, before going under the car raise the suspension to max height, remove the ignition key and use axle stands to support the car - if not and a height sensor is knocked the suspension can quickly drop to a low level.

Hi Paul - and thanks for the quick response.

It's a 2011 reg, HDi 160 1977cc engine.

Like I say, the dealership say that they have checked and replaced the sensor once already. I guess it could be a problem with the wiring somewhere. I think I'll leave it to the dealership to look into that again...

The oil level sensor on this engine is at the front, just a bit to the gearbox side and below the oil filter and is like a long probe that goes down in to the sump. So you could have a look, pull off the connector, check it is clean and put it back to see if it helps. Citroen part no. 1131K6 (but if buying check against your VIN)
