glenncarshalton Posted March 11, 2016 Posted March 11, 2016 Hi there. This is my first post and I'm very glad this forum exists. Thanks to all who make it happen. I bought my first Citroen about a year ago, a 59 plate C4 Grand Picasso 1.6 Hdi VTR+. I have been very happy with it - comfortable, reliable, and versitile. A month or two ago I began to notice a problem with the revving. I would be travelling along at a constant speed (usually happens at lower speeds sub 50mph) and then the car would stutter and hesitate. If I deployed the clutch and coasted along the engine would return to idle revs but would fluctuate up and down without me touching the accelerator pedal. It happens about once a week and after I arrive at my destination the next journey is usually problem free. I've not had it happen on the motorway, just when driving around town. I've not yet taken to a garage as it doesn't happen constantly and it would be guaranteed not to do it when a mechanic took it for a test drive! :-) Any advice please? Cheers. Glenn Quote
paul.h Posted March 11, 2016 Posted March 11, 2016 Welcome to the forum. Is the servicing up to date including replacing the fuel filter or if not due for replacement any water drained from it ? Have you tried filling the fuel tank up at a different garage ? When this happens, is the accelerator pedal always in the same position and if you adjust the pedal a bit (push down or up a bit) does this make a difference ? Quote
glenncarshalton Posted March 11, 2016 Author Posted March 11, 2016 Hello Paul, thanks for your welcome and reply. The car has done 95,000 miles and the little spanner indicator on the dash is up showing I'm due for a routine service shortly. Will ask the mechanic to look at the fuel filter, thanks for the idea. I don't always fill up at the same service station, so I don't think it could be that. I'll try using the pedal as you suggest next time it happens. It seems to happen at around 30-40mph so the pedal may be in a similar place. From memory trying to accelerate does not fix it, but I'll test. Thanks again,Glenn Quote
paul.h Posted March 11, 2016 Posted March 11, 2016 Fuel filter replacement intervals vary with models and will be in your Warranty and Maintenance book but could be every 2 years on the 1.6 hdi but your car is a high mileage so it may be due based on mileage. At your annual miles services will probably be every 12500 miles and not every year (or possibly 2 years). With the 1.6 hdi it is not recommended to go beyond the service interval and you should use the Citroen recommended oil (or one that meets the relevant PSA spec) which could be Total INEO ECS 5w30 but will be in the Warranty and Maintenance book. SandMan Posted April 20, 2016 Posted April 20, 2016 Hi Glenn how did you get on? I have the 2.0hdi EGS and need a new fuel quite regularly. I think I've had about 4 in 20k miles. I've recently got a new problem where it seems to rev whilst I'm driving at constant speed, and it's intermittent. I change the oil regularly and I've just had the BG engine clean from halfords and a new fuse box as the car would terminate all electrical functions on the dash before cutting the engine. Citroen found this one for me and changed the battery at the same time. The dash would show handbrake failure, esp failure, gearbox failure etc etc. Before cutting the engine. There also was a faulty switch under the brake pedal which showed up when plugged in at my local garage which I think caused limp mode to come on where I couldn't go past 3rd on the auto box - a known fault apparently when the replacement switch was ordered. Now I just have the revving and stuttering problem to solve. At one point the dash showed risk of particulate filter clogging or some such like who I honk is dpf filter but it hasn't come back on again. I'm just driving it around waiting to see if it will finally come back up with an en error fr the revving that I can either get it plugged in for or I can read on the dash. It's at 60500 miles 2007 plate. Just wondered if you solved your problem or if anyone has had a thing similar to the revving I now have. Worst fear would be clutch I think as they sound expensive on an auto, I don't really know. But my garage doesn't want to do a dpf clean unless the car is asking for it as it needs to cooperate I think. Hope some of this helps someone, it's been a fun few weeks working out this multi layer problem :) Cheers Quote
paul.h Posted April 21, 2016 Posted April 21, 2016 Welcome to the forum. Possibly the increased revving may be the car trying to do a dpf regeneration. If it was plugged in to a Lexia diagnostic tool at a dealer or other Citroen specialist you would be able to see when the regenerations were. What is a Halford's BG engine clean ? Quote
SandMan Posted April 22, 2016 Posted April 22, 2016 Hi Paul and thank you for the welcome :) My apologies it's a BG range of fuel and engine additives which come in tim cans which are supplied through Kwik Fit, not Halfords sorry. I had one added to the fuel to clean the fuel system and one added to the oils and run for 15 mins before emptying through the sump, which got quite a bit of sludge out apparently, and a final one added to the newly topped up oil which is a conditioner. I know Kwik Fit offer them alongside a service now for an extra 50 pounds or you can pop in and get them individually for 20 each at my local one. Some to have made it smoother but not solved the revving. My garage tells me they think it is now an EGR valve which needs cleaning as is happens intermittently which I'm told is a pain to get to. So I'm thinking maybe trying another fuel additive before I take her in next week to see if I can get it cleaned that way. Thanks Quote
SandMan Posted April 22, 2016 Posted April 22, 2016 I will also ask if they can tell me when the regeneration cycles are if they can plug it in, the revving is on and off when it happens and oniony do small local journeys I guess I would need a good long run to have an effective regeneration? I've never had one that I know of before. thank you Quote
cardsharp1 Posted May 2, 2016 Posted May 2, 2016 hi i have a c4 grand picasso 57 plate is there anyone in the wakefield area with the lexia3 software who would be willing to re calibrate my egs gearbox for a fee many thanks Quote
paul.h Posted May 2, 2016 Posted May 2, 2016 Welcome to the forum. On one of the C5 sections there is a pinned topic of people able to help others with diagnostics. Quote
