hi.

little bit of a problem with my 2005 citroen relay. 2.2 HDI engine.

started cutting out when pulling up hill, or when it seems as though the engine is under more load than normal.

engine management light comes on red and cuts out straight away. went into limp mode once but just cuts out mainly.

8 times out of ten it will fire up straight away afterwards, but now and then it will turn over but wont start, so will need leaving for 20 seconds or so.

also ive noticed it only does it once the engines been running for 15 mins or so.

today, I have heard a funny high pitched whinning/humming noise which runs on for around 2 seconds after the engine is turned off. like a pump run on or something. never heard it before.

about 3 years ago I had fuel pump and injectors done.

it has recently had a service

I hope someone could shed some light on thuis for me I would be very grateful

many thanks in advance

You are going to need the fault code reading to see what is wrong, any other way would be a guess. If you replace parts hoping to find the faulty one you could spend a lot of money before finding the right one. A possibility would be the crankshaft sensor since these sometimes fail once hot but when cooled down will let the engine run again, however, these sensors do not always put the engine management light on so may not show up when reading fault codes. If you do not have  a code reader it is cheaper to buy one than pay for a diagnostic check but a low cost reader will only read engine fault codes that can affect emissions and if a full diagnostic check is needed may not help. Example of a code reader that also gives some live data https://www.gendan.co.uk/product_FXNT200.html

The humming noise, does it do it if the engine is left to idle for half a minute or so before switching off the engine - just thinking it could be the turbo slowing down. On some engines the egr valve is actuated a few times after the engine is switched off to clean it and this can be heard on our C4. Maybe you need to look under the bonnet whilst somebody else switches the engine off to help locate the noise.
