dori2o Posted May 3, 2016 Posted May 3, 2016 (edited) Hi, I'm new to Citroen cars having recently purchased a 2nd hand C4 VTR 2005 model. Unfortunately I made the rookie mistake of purchasing a car with only the transponder key and no FOB or card with PIN Code. I've been quoted £145 +VAT to get a new fob provided. They come to me, programme the fob and cut the key etc. This is on Manchester/Oldham areas. Is this the best deal I'm likely to get? How does this compare to dealer prices? Is there any other way around this? Is it possible to get a used fob with blank key blade and reprogramme the fob to the car DIY? I did this with my last car and it saved a fortune when the fob broke. Also the Transponder key is a bit hit and miss when opening via the passenger door. I have to pull the key in and out sevral times before it will unlock. s this likely to be a lock issue or is it because the key is becoming worn? Is there an easy fix to this? Would having a blank key cut just for entry/fuel cap use be beneficial? Is there a special way of using the key to unlock the door that I'm not aware of? Any advice on this appreciated Edited May 3, 2016 by dori2o Quote
paul.h Posted May 3, 2016 Posted May 3, 2016 Welcome to the forum. The price you have given will be very similar to a Citroen dealer so you may be better using a dealer which will give a 12 month guarantee on the work. The dealer will order the key/fob against your VIN and the key will not need cutting so it will not have any wear copied from your existing key. You could try something like wd40 sprayed in the lock to see if it helps clean/lubricate it. If you obtained a used fob it would not have the correct immobiliser chip for your car so may not start it. Quote

Would it be possible to obtain a used fob, programme it, and just use it to open the doors, then continue using the transponder key to start the car? This would then allow me time to save and get a proper key/set of keys sorted out. Quote
