I went out Thursday morning to look at a Mazda 6 that was advertised in Auto trader.

On the way I stopped off to check out a Seat Leon that I'd shortlisted.

I never made it that far.

I got my eye on a C5, paid a deposit and collected it a few hours later on my way to work where it'll be standing until Monday Evening.

To claim it was an impulse buy wouldn't do justice to impulse buys. It's the first time I've bought a car as quickly.

I'm just wondering what I've let myself in for.

58 reg, 2 litre HDI, auto with 72000 miles and FSH.

I'm not even sure what the trim is, possibly Exclusive.

Welcome to the forum.

If it is the exclusive it will have the hydractive suspension and will glide along as opposed to a VTR which will have struts and coil springs. On the C5 technical section there is a pinned topic of Common Problems to have a look at, most are for the earlier C5 but the C5 (X7) apply to your car. Common ones include a leaking steering rack which needs a replacement rack to fix, front wiper motors seizing, front window winding mechanism breaking, odd electrical problems if the battery is due for replacement. At 8 years old it may be due for the air con regassing if it does not cool down much but that can apply to any car and does not cost much.

If the Mazda was a diesel, I think they may have a reputation for early engine failures due to the oil diluting with diesel from regenerating the exhaust dpf.

Thanks, the Mazda was petrol. I was trying to avoid diesel because of dpf problems.

But I couldn't resist the C5, the gearbox is a Teflon, as was the Mazda and the Seat. I don't seem to like manuals anymore, my wife has a 63 plate Ibiza with three pedals and that's one too many in my opinion.

It's got the hydraulic suspension so it must be the exclusive.

The a/c seems to be working ATM but I know a guy who can check it for me.

The battery save thingy seems to come on after a couple of minutes, is this normal?

The economy mode comes in to stop the battery going flat if something is left on. It is  a Citroen/Peugeot thing but should be a lot longer than a few minutes. I would check the battery voltage in case it needs replacing or possibly if the car has been at a dealer for some time it may just need the car using or charging a bit. Should be about 12.7 volts before starting and about 14.4 volts with the engine running.
