paul.h Posted August 10, 2016 Posted August 10, 2016 This may be a common problem and the following has been copied from a post by ancell on the Caravan talk forum: Our tow car of two years Citroen C4 Picasso Grand 2014 2 litre diesel 30000 miles from new has been a great vehicle till yesterday!Off shopping gets half a mile from home suddenly a red warning appears charging fault Stop Immediately!Pulled off lifted the bonnet to find destroyed fan belt and disintegrated belt tensioner!Kept an eye on the engine temperature as motored back home and called RAC for uplift to dealer.Just been informed by Citroen garage "its a well known fault we will be fitting the upgraded replacement tensioner"Worth a phone call perhaps if you have this modelIf it had happened on sunday we would have got caught towing on our 200 mile trip home from the highlands in gale force winds. That would have been a whole different story. Rookie2 Posted September 29, 2016 Posted September 29, 2016 Strangely enough, the C8 that I am meddling with had a knackered auxilliary belt tensioner. It was making the belt bounce and was making a right racket. and I am assuming it had been like that for some time.I renewed the tensioner and the belt, low and behold, a new sound now became audible, it now turns out that the constant bouncing of the fan belt due to the seized tensioner, has now damaged the rubber damper in the Crank Pulley and it is now evident that it is making a loud clikin noise like someone tapping a tin plate with a coin. Kinda wish I had left the fan belt tensioner alone Lol. Check yours now, start the engine and watch the fan belt as it passes over the pulleys, there should be no jumping, wobble or rattle or rythmic humming from the belt Quote
paul.h Posted September 30, 2016 Author Posted September 30, 2016 Crank pulley failure on Citroens seems to be a common problem as the rubber can perish. Quote
paul.h Posted April 16, 2018 Author Posted April 16, 2018 When our 2015 C4 1.6 hdi had its 2018 service at the dealer, they replaced the aux belt tensioner as a recall without charge to us. It is not classed as a safety recall so you are not contacted and if the car had not gone to a Citroen dealer it would not have been done. It looked as if the old belt was re-used so possibly they just inspect the belt and if ok will not replace it. Quote
