spiff Posted August 9, 2017 Posted August 9, 2017 Good evening from a sunny Mullion Cove Cornwall.I wonder if someone can assist, we recently purchased a 2003 C5 petrol 1997 automatic estate.I have added a picture of the engine. The oil dipstick may have the original top, but the shaft is a length of clear plastic with no markings on it.The end is touching the oil .Would any of you gentlemen with the same engine in the photo, be kind enough to measure the length of the oil dipstick to the max and the min.God Bless Spiff Quote
spiff Posted August 13, 2017 Author Posted August 13, 2017 Looks like I shall never know the lenth of my dipstick, and at nearly 72 it is somethong a chap should now by now : ) Spiff : ) Quote
paul.h Posted August 13, 2017 Posted August 13, 2017 Probably best to buy a new one. You could be our only petrol C5 owner on here. Quote
spiff Posted August 14, 2017 Author Posted August 14, 2017 Good evening from a wet Mullion Cove Cornwall. : ) it is looking that way, Alanna carries a tape measure in her bag, so if we come across one we can always ask. Quite a few C5s at the local boot sale each Wednesday, not for sale but a popular car for boot sale goers, I shall have to hope we come across a petrol one. The engine has done 150000 and sounds fine. God Bless Spiff Quote
paul.h Posted August 17, 2017 Posted August 17, 2017 Had a look at the parts diagrams and there are a few different dip sticks for the 2.0 petrol engine and these are different to all the other engines. If you are buying one you will use your VIN to get the right part but if measuring another one, you will need to check the car VIN to see if it uses the same part. 1174E2 for the EW10D engine1174E2 or 117478 or 1174E1 for the EW10J4 engine, depending on the engine number with the change from E2 at engine number 1050110. A search shows that 1174E2 is common on other Citroens but looking at one, you probably have lost the end of the dipstick with the max/min marks on. If so and the oil level is still on the end of the tube, the oil level could be too high. For these plastic dip sticks it is common for the end to come off. I read that Citroen used to take the sump off to find the old bit but decided they would not cause any damage so gave up. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/OIL-DIPSTICK-FOR-CITROEN-C5-XSARA-PICASSO-SYNERGIE-1-8i-2-0i-EW10J4-EW7J4-1174E2-/370729163618 Quote
spiff Posted August 19, 2017 Author Posted August 19, 2017 Good morning from a sunny Mullion Cove, thank you for your reply. The whole length of the present dipstick is clear plastic and looks to have been wedged into the handle, so heaven knows as to what it is reading. It looks to have been there a while with out the engine blowing up, so some consolation : ) Having checked the AL4 auto box properly yesterday it was over filled by a litre. This is the problem with a vehicle that has been through a few hands. Not sure either than a pile of garage service receipts means much. It had passed its last MOT leaving a bonking noise from the front suspension, the previous owner said he had mentioned it to the garage who said they had checked all the joints with a crow bar. One of the front drop links was so loose, I could move it with my hand, the rubber had a large rip in it and the joint was so rusted it must have been like that for ages. All fixed now. I have been reading on a forum of Re neck fixes for the rattling cartelistic converter, some of the suggestions were very funny : ) http://www.ar15.com/forums/t_1_5/1224036_Any_redneck_andamp_quot_fixesandamp_quot__for_a_rattling_catalytic_converter_.html I shall put up with it for now, though I am tempted to try emptying it out as your good self suggested in another post, in case any exhaust paste is in there God Bless Spiff Quote
paul.h Posted August 19, 2017 Posted August 19, 2017 If not done already, cleaning the brakes is something that usually needs doing on a car if you are not sure of its history. Dealers do not include brake servicing as part of a service. On the C5 the fronts can seize a bit with the dust that builds up and the rear ones suffer from corrosion between the suspension arm and caliper that can cause squealing and also the caliper to be pushed out and even touch the wheel. The Haynes manual is good and there are pinned topics on one of the C5 sections on the brakes. The brake and clutch fluid should be replaced every 2 years - we had a topic recently where this had not been done and the brakes failed to work going down a hill. Quote
paul.h Posted September 20, 2017 Posted September 20, 2017 Possibly it was typed in as a bit of a joke rather than a spelling mistake. Looking a definition up it would be somebody who converts people to be part of a cartel. Quote
