C5 X7 front wheel rumble

Recommended Posts

I have a 2008 c5 x7 tourer exclusive 2 ltr diesel with 84374 miles on the clock which I purchased in 2016 with 65689 miles.. Soon  after I  purchased the car  I noticed a rumble

coming from the off side front which sounded like the starting of a wheel bearing on its way out.  I had this checked and bearing ok. and all suspension checked and again ok.  the car has now been into 3 Citroen Garages + an Citroen specialist for investigation and the only suggestion from all is "Its your tyres".  I changed to Avon z7 - no difference !!  I again had the car checked and got the same story its your tyres.  Changed to Michelin Primacy 4, and surprise rumble still there.  This is spoiling  a lovely car.  Has any one else experienced this annoyance and how was it solved.  Its driving me up the wall.

The C5 X7 is well known for road noise and there is a long topic to have a read but one person suggested the wear lip on the front brake discs can give a noise. With your car being the exclusive model it will probably have 19 inch wheels which make the noise even worse.

  • paul.h changed the title to C5 X7 front wheel rumble

Something worth trying does the tone of the rumble change on long right or left bends this would suggest wheel bearing.

The mechanic will only check for play in the bearing and spin it by hand a dry bearing may not show up in these type of checks until very worn.

Are you certain its from the front? it can be very deceptive from the drivers seat, get someone else to drive it while you sit in the back.

In Sept 2020 I replaced all the tyres on our 2007 C5. It had Michelins on and these were replaced with the latest Michelins. The new ones have larger gaps between the treads and are distinctly noisier than the old ones. It could be the improved newer tyres are not as good as the old but these were not available. The old tyres were Michelin HP Primacy 215/55R16 93V £624 for 4 in April 2012 and the new ones Primacy 4 same size but 93W £482 for 4. It will take quite a few years to wear out the new tyres and I will just have to put up with the noise. The tyre info did give them a low noise value as well so other makes might not be any better.
