craig68xr3i Posted February 1, 2007 Posted February 1, 2007 Bought my xantia 1.9td in November. When i went to pick it up it ran o.k. It has been stood since then un-used and when i tried it yesterday the battery was flat so we towed it and it started first time. Left it running for a couple of hours but when i tried it this morning the engine turns but wont fire. Heater plugs were changed when i bought it. The only other problem i know about is that there is a wire that comes from the second injector that goes to the loom , it has a pink, green and brown wire in it (the brown one has snapped.(what is this for?). Also , should the rubber fuel primer bubble be hard all of the time because when the engine has not run for a couple of hours it becomes soft?. Quote
DickieG Posted February 2, 2007 Posted February 2, 2007 The wire you refer to informs the ecu of the timing of fuel being injected and adjusts it accordingly, if there is a problem with it it shouldn't affect the car starting but it may cause it run a little rough. You may well have a small leak on the fuel system prior to the fuel pump, bear in mind that leaks here invariably don't show up as the fuel is being sucked rather than pumped. As a result a leak will allow air into the fuel line (and the fuel to run back to the tank) but not leak out of it. Try pumping the priming bulb until it gets hard, if the car then starts this would suggest a leak is the cause. Quote
craig68xr3i Posted February 6, 2007 Author Posted February 6, 2007 Thanks DickieG, It does start after pressing the bulb although it takes a while ( 3 tries about 20 seconds each). I will check the fuel lines once i get it in the air. Would you know if the fuel sender unit is accessable from under the car?.Ta. Quote
kfk Posted February 6, 2007 Posted February 6, 2007 Fuel sender unit accessible by folding rear seat forward and lifting plastic cover out of floor Quote
DickieG Posted February 6, 2007 Posted February 6, 2007 If the bulb takes a while to return to it's normal (unsquashed) shape you may have a build up of debris/fungus on the plastic mesh of the fuel pick up. I came across this recently on a Xantia which had covered 187,000 miles. Quote
craig68xr3i Posted February 7, 2007 Author Posted February 7, 2007 Had a scan at the pipes around the injector pump. Someone advised it may be the diaghram on the top of the injector pimp that had perished and found the pipe the goes from the diaghram to the air intake had a large hole in it. So i presume this is stopping the diaghram from operating in the pump. Have replaced the pipe and fingers crossed it should fix the starting problem when i get the dash back together in the morning. Quote
craig68xr3i Posted February 9, 2007 Author Posted February 9, 2007 Put everything back together and still wont start from cold. I towed the car and it started o.k. Warmed the engine and started every time with the engine warm. Let it cool down for 2 hours and will not start. Suspect glow plugs are at fault despite the guy who sold me the car saying they were new. So next job is the fiddly bit of removing them. Quote
DickieG Posted February 10, 2007 Posted February 10, 2007 Have you checked to see whether the glowplugs are receiving a feed and if so, what current is being drawn as this will indicate whether the plugs or the glowplug control box relay is at fault. If you do wish to remove the glowplugs you'll need an "Offset" ring spanner to get at the one behind the pump, without this spanner it's very difficult. Quote
craig68xr3i Posted February 13, 2007 Author Posted February 13, 2007 When the ignition is switched on there is a fair bit of clicking from near the battery. Is the relay anywhere near there?. Quote
DickieG Posted February 13, 2007 Posted February 13, 2007 Yes its just behind it mounted on the inner wing. Quote
