BobR Posted August 16, 2007 Posted August 16, 2007 Hi My OSF brake pads rattle. I've looked at both sides and there seems to be a small device missing from the front of the caliper. I assume this stops the pads from rattling around. Does anyone know what this little device is called and whether it is possible to get one second hand without having to buy a whole caliper. It looks like it just clips on. Any help much appreciated thanks. Quote
Johndouglas Posted August 17, 2007 Posted August 17, 2007 Some models have them and some don't - but the Xantias have anti-rattle springs holding the pads. Look along the racks at Halfords. You should find them in packets. Quote

BobR Posted August 17, 2007 Author Posted August 17, 2007 Thanks John I've been quoted about £40 for a brake spring kit, which includes bits I don't need. That was from the Citroen garage. I'll try a couple of motor factors over the weekend. Quote
Johndouglas Posted August 18, 2007 Posted August 18, 2007 If one of your pads has a spring on it, take it with you. There's different shapes and sizes. Also make a sketch of how its fitted before removing. Quote
BobR Posted August 18, 2007 Author Posted August 18, 2007 Thanks again John Went to a motor factors today with a digital photo of both sides. I've ordered what I hope is the right kit. It was £8.99 so a big difference from the £40 quoted from Citroen main dealer. I'm hoping that it just clips on over the top and that I don't need to remove the pads to get it in. It's been a lot of trouble for a little rattle. It doesn't affect the braking but that rattle is very annoying! Quote
DickieG Posted August 24, 2007 Posted August 24, 2007 Is your Xantia a V6, HDI or TD auto? If so then the problem is due to play in the caliper upper slides (Bendix caliper). Citroen issued a technical bulletin on this with the repair kit part number 4449 71. The kit is a piece of sprung metal which fits between the caliper and the mounting bracket. To find out whether this is the cause of the fault the noise should disappear when braking lightly over rough surfaces. Quote
BobR Posted August 24, 2007 Author Posted August 24, 2007 You're spot on. I've now fixed the fault. I got a kit for £8.99 which included the clip you describe. This simply clipped onto the caliper casing holding the top of the brake pads firmly in place. The rattle has now gone. Quote
