lynndyloo Posted November 10, 2007 Posted November 10, 2007 Hi,We have a 1999 Citroen Xantia HDi Engine and we are thinking of using Biodiesel instead of diesel.I have just read somewhere that it is ok for older engines but not HDi engines.I am a bit confused as I read somewhere else that it is ok in all diesel engines.Does anyone have any info on it or has anyone tried it in their HDi engine,Would be grateful for any info. Many Thanks.Lynn. Johndouglas Posted November 11, 2007 Posted November 11, 2007 It depends what you mean by bio-diesel. If you're talking about home-brew with veggie oil, I wouldn't recomend it. But all diesel in France has been biodiesel for the past two years. It's a 5% mix and none of the millions of HDI's in France has suffered. In fact, most of the diesel I use is bought there. Quote

Guest Peter34 Posted November 19, 2007 Posted November 19, 2007 Hi,The usual thing with the citreon deisel is the pump type, if its a Boch then its ok, if its the Lucas then it will fail. Thats using veggie oil which should be at 85% oil with 15% unleaded. The xantia I've got now was run on cooking oil for 2 years before I bought it. The car was full of it when I took it overand I drove 90 miles home with it and it didn't seem to be any different to any other xantia. Still going well. Peter Quote
veggysmuggler Posted November 27, 2007 Posted November 27, 2007 veggy oil is perfectly fine for the older TD's but with the newer generation on HDi's,it causes problems with fuel pressure,so where in a older car you car run pure svo,in HDi's it needs to be 60/40 diesel/veggy oil.................i've ran 3 xantia's on veggy oil now without any problems what so ever for the last year Quote
Guest androcles Posted November 29, 2008 Posted November 29, 2008 BIO DIESEL WARNING! BIO DIESEL WARNING! BIO DIESEL WARNING! BIO DIESEL WARNING! Don't bother with bio fuel unless it's from a proper street garage and even then, maybe it's not worth it. I'm about to spend approx £1k (yes, you read correctly, £1k) for a reconditioned fuel pump for my 2.1 following a fill up with bio diesel from a guy selling the stuff on an industrial estate. Citroen want £2k which is unbelievable!!! Fuel system warning light came on the day after I filled up initially with no symptoms but after a few weeks, engine started to idle very erratically, then it just cut out without warning. Citroen specialist has just given me the bad news. Perfectly good car when I got it for £800 in May 08, absolutely nothing wrong with it (in fact, may consider cutting losses and buying another Xantia instead, there're plenty good'uns under a grand) Quote
techbod Posted November 29, 2008 Posted November 29, 2008 1k for a fuel pump you must be joking or am I missing something? http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/FUEL-PUMP-NEW--CITRO...121210003r25849 Quote
Guest androcles Posted November 29, 2008 Posted November 29, 2008 I'm afraid I'm right, Techbod. I believe it's a limited production run Lucas pump which was only fitted to the 2.1 hence grotesquely offensive quotes for exchange or new items. I am not a happy bunny, let me assure you! Quote
techbod Posted November 29, 2008 Posted November 29, 2008 truly unbelievable indeed :o I would have checked every source to beat that http://www.hydraulicpumps.co.uk/serviceexunits.php useless link ( Note: We cannot assist with Lucas Diesel pumps ) didn't notice that bit  Quote
Guest Colin Hunter Posted November 30, 2008 Posted November 30, 2008 I see yet another VEGGY OIL officionado has "Had his chips"! What a surprise! The old Mechanical injection jobbies are OK on Veggy, that is the 1.9 XUDs from before about '98 before they introduced any electronics into the equation. The lucas "Epic" system fitted to the 2.1s and the later HDis are a NO GO area for pure BIO and especially veggy. It's just NOT worth the risk. I live in Shetland where Derv hit £1.54 this summer and is STILL over £1.20 a litre. I STILL wouldn't DREAM of putting anything else in my motor! If you're looking for sympathy it's in the dictionary, Between SH*T and SYPHILIS! Cheers. Quote
Guest androcles Posted November 30, 2008 Posted November 30, 2008 not looking for sympathy Mr Hunter  , just looking for an HDi or maybe someone knows of a 2.1 for spares and I can get the pump out of it; I suspect though that these comparatively rare engined vehicles are a bit thin on the ground oh the irony of attempting to be green with bio diesel and now a whole car's going to the scrappers for want of a single (stupidly expensive) part... techbod Posted December 1, 2008 Posted December 1, 2008 hmm perhaps looking what other makes of car use that engine like Mercedes/ford fo instance, many engines are used if other cars that's why they call it PSA group ( Nissan-subaru-mitsubishi-Peugeot-Renault ) to mention just a few and other things to consider are who makes the pump and what other pump could take its place? as long as it give the fuel deliver pressure constant it can be replace with aftermarket and can be place in another place outside the tank or build it in, come on the old days when we made things fit and work;) Quote

Guest Colin Hunter Posted December 8, 2008 Posted December 8, 2008 Hi guys. Regarding the price/availability of the 2.1 TD Lucas EPIC fuel pump, I have a friend with an MOT failed 2.1 td Pug 406 on a P plate. It's failed on suspension bushes, brake pipes etc and will be scrapped. It still runs well (I've actually been in it before it went belly up and can vouch for it's performance.) and although it's done a lot of miles the pump is not the original and should be OK. I have tried to contact "Androcles" via a PM but have had no reply. Anyone interested? Cheers. Quote
Guest androcles Posted December 15, 2008 Posted December 15, 2008 Hi Colin, I haven't been on the site for a while; will contact you to discuss, thanks very much for making effort to contact me Andy Quote
