Hi guys, Stupid oik here :) , Just passed my test and have my first car and want to know some basics with out having to do a PHD.

It looks a bit brown the liquid in there at the moment...

Do I just put Anti freeze directly in or do I have to put water in as well?

Or just be a nerd! :D

Welcome to the forum.

 

On the C5 I think the anti freeze is a type that does not need to be replaced every couple of years - have a look in the car handbook, there may be some info in the service schedule. Unless there is a leak it should not need the level topping up. As such it is not the usual blue or green colour.

 

If you give year car model and year others may be able to confirm this.

 

If the level does need topping up this would normally be with a water/anti freeze mix of the correct strength - using just water would lead to corrosion within the engine and possible freezing of the water which could damage the engine block.

I have just changed mine - I was advised by the local spares shop that my 2001 2.2 HDI was originally filled with Red Antifreeze, he looked it up in a book so I assume this was correct. The red antifreeze is longer life and apparently good for 5 years where as the blue is apparently only good for 2. I was also told its not advisable to mix different ones as it can gel and given the 5 year original red stuff was only slightly more expensive I went for this. My old stuff was also pale brown on draining it off but looked very much diluted.

My C5 has clear antifreeze, it feels oily when you put your finger in it.

 

Citroen only sell coloured antifreeze over the counter (well that's all my garage has!), but Peugeot have colourless long life antifreeze they use for 2002 HDI's onwards.

 

Choose whichever you wish, but give the system a good flush with a hoze to remove traces of old antifreeze that could contaminate the new stuff.
