My xsara HDi engine developed a really heavy knocking and blowing noise today, I suspect it may have dropped a valve and holed a piston, anyone had anything similar?

Any advice on repair or how much a replacement engine may be (oftens cheaper to change the whole lot than strip down, replace broken parts and rebuild)

Noise happened all of a sudden at around 20mph in town. No immediate loss of power, no warning lights, no smoke frrom exhaust either - just a loud heavy clattering noise when revs above idle speed.

Wasn't far from the dealer I bought it off - he came to have a look and said "not good, I will have it in the workshop on monday and let you know"

I will keep you posted on the outcome.

a faulty injecter could be the problem. over fueling.

Thanks for the prompt reply and giving me a bit of hope.

Would I not have got an ECU warning light though for maybe low rail pressure ??

if it is the injector it will be dripping rather than spraying so there will be no problems with fuel pressure. if you had damaged a piston you would notice a drop in power due to loss of compression.

Early indications from the garage is definitely something mechanical, further stripdown required but the possibility of fitting another engine is looking likely.

I will keep you posted on any further developments.

No events/error codes logged in ECU. All four pots down on compression by over 50%. looking as though cambelt may have jumped a tooth??

AFAIK the RHZ engine is an improved version of the RHY, It has some power and torque improvement obtained through management of turbocharger pressures by the electronic injection ECU .

one is 90hp (rhy). other is 110 (rhz). difference is an intercooler. as john said the ecu alters the boost to suit the cooler air on the rhz engine giving it the same hp as the rhy at 1000 less rpm which is why you get the 20hp extra at max rpm. if its just 1 tooth its jumped you should get away with it. bottom pully wears away the outside edge of the timing belt and a piece of it ends up under the belt causing it to jump. done quite a few of these and never had one cause any damage so fingers crossed. the loss of compression will be down to the valves not closing fully at tdc.

No apparent wear on the belt at all, and seems correctly tensioned?? According to the service record a new belt had been fitted only last August and has only covered 11k since.

More investigation needed.

S/H warrantied engine now fitted and goes very well indeed.

Once I get a bit more time a stripdown of original motor should reveal extent of damage and cause.

The cause was in fact a cam follower bearing - it came out of the rocker and released the rocker which in effect stopped the exhaust valve from opening. It would have been a viable repair job and probably not too costly either - oh well.

Anyway seeing as I have another engine fitted I have a few spares I really need to sell to recoup some of the outlay.

I have a HDI pump, common rail, a set of injectors, a turbo unit and a fairly easily repairable cylinder head. What sort of prices should I be starting them off at on e-bay??

worth remembering for future references
