Hi, I have just bought a C5 2.2 HDI Estate 2001. When we took it for a test run from a private seller it seemed fine and we fell in love with it but soon after getting it home their became a knocking noise from the back (like loud clicking) I took it to the local garage and the put it up on to the ramps (if you bounce hard on the back end you can hear the noise) They had four people under the car and no one could locate exactly where the clicking was coming from? The suspension work properly and it clicks when on bumpy roads or some times turning corners. It was booked in to the local garage twice but came back just the same, so I decided to take it to Citroen they fixed something on the front roll bar and said that would be it fixed and the noise was from the front, but as soon as I left the garage it was still the same, Citroen then said they would have another look. Even They cannot pinpoint the noise (I think it might be something seized as It lay for just over 3 months over the winter before they sold it) so they have suggested the only thing I can do is replace all the back suspension arms wishbones and back axle at a cost of just under £2000. I love the car to bits but cannot afford this as I am on a low income. Has anyone any suggestions on what it could be or anyone else had this problem and found out what it was. Thank you for any help. Angela

Simple things to check include a stone in the tyre tread, something in a wheel trim, corrosion between a rear brake caliper and the suspension arm which pushes the caliper out and catches the wheel (common problem usually noticed by brake squeal and lots of postings on here about it). Early cars were known for noisy rear suspension so it may even be this.

I get a very occasional loud click from the rear when going over a certain hump back bridge "if i'm hosest, a little too quick" I contacted my local dealer and spoke to the service manager.

He said "does this happen when its a dry day but less when it's wet?" I thought about it and said "yes".

He told me it was possibly the bolts/bushes on a rear bar. Sorry but I can't remember what he called it but if you look under the rear of the car its a bar that sits left to right below the rear silencer.

It serves the purpose of stiffening the rear chassis. He said a quick fix was to wd40 the ends where it is bolted and make sure the securing bolts are tight.

I have to say that I hardly hear it now and when I do, I know its time to have a quick spray, usually every 4 weeks.

I'm not saying it's the same problem you are having but it's worth a try to eliminate another possibility.

If it was noise all the time , wet or dry then it would be rear arm bearings!

Another question though, do you play golf? Check to see if a rogue golfball has got into the spare wheel well. you'd be surprised how many times mystery noises have been acredited to this.

Also check your spare wheel and jack etc. Is it all in place and free from knocking?

Hope it helps.
