robertj Posted June 23, 2008 Posted June 23, 2008 Just bought a C5 estate auto HDi and really good ride quiet and just did a 600mile round trip and really pleased except one thing the heavy fuel consumption. Around town about 25-28, on the motorway about 40 and thats not giving it stick taking it easy up the geears and not exceeding 80 on motorway. Is this normal as I have had diesels before Rover av 45mpg Audi45-50Mpg cavalier sometimes 50+ even had a audi TT that was better and that had 225 bhp. bob Quote
paul.h Posted June 23, 2008 Posted June 23, 2008 There are some posts on fuel use on the C5 pages that may help. We have a 2.2 hdi 6 speed manual hatchback which returns more than you have stated - about 50 mpg on motorways sticking within speed limits (more if lower speeds used), may be 40 round town depending on queues. Things that could increase fuel include binding rear brakes and need for replacement of the exhaust particle filter. Quote

My brim to brim average over the last 16500 miles is 44.5 MPG, with high 40's easily achievable on long motorway runs. Around town, it can drop to mid 30's. Even allowing for your automatic box, your car does sound as though it is drinking too much; I would expect a real world average of high 30's. In addition to Paul h's suggestions, see if the air filter is blocked/dirty. Quote

Guest Colin Hunter Posted June 28, 2008 Posted June 28, 2008 I find Parkers website to be a good source of information whwn you're looking for the running costs (Mpg, VED band etc) of your car or prospective purchase. The info for the C5 estate can be found here. http://www.parkers.co.uk/cars/specs/Summar...=145&page=3 As can be seen there is a fair penalty for owning the auto, 4 or 5 mpg overall and one band higher VED. Not worth it in my opinion, but then I'm a natural born hater of auto transmission. What else are you going to do with your left leg anyway? If you're interested in saving money on fuel by acheiving better MPG, have a look at my "Mergi" thread on this forum. http://www.citroen-owners-club.co.uk/citro...?showtopic=4530 Cheers. Hope you get to the bottom of it! Quote
