My steering wheel suddenly seems to be a bit loose - I can rock it slightly and there is a little bit of play switching it left/right.

I'd like to get to the nut to check it for play but first have to get through the air bag. Is it possible to do? I believe it (the air bag and boss that contains it) clips through the wheel and is released through the back of the wheel but before I release it I'd like to know that I'm not going to set it off.

Any advice from anyone that knows?

Thanks.

P.S. I know it is an explosive device!

Not sure of the translation but it is something along the lines of:

- turn on the ignition to ensure air bag light works ok.

- turn off ignition and remove key.

- disconnect negative battery terminal.

- wait at least 10 minutes.

- under the steering wheel centre bit there are some holes. In these use a screwdriver to push to the outside the clip fittings and the air bag should then be able to be lifted out.

- wheel nut torque 20 Nm.

That's great thanks - there are holes at the back of the steering wheel which are the access to the tabs so the above makes sense.

Hi.

I had same problem with mine, i have put my thread in fixes and problems. I went to local garage in North East called Centreville. They did it for nothing. I think it's an easy job, but as i am not mechanicaly minded wouldnt want to try it. Its a common fault for steering wheel to come off on a C5, mines 01 plate and if it went for MOT it would fail.

Sorry i couldn't of been any more help.

Finally got round to this the other day. It was pretty straight forward though releasing the clips was fiddly.

The airbag is held on by two tabs which you release from behind the wheel with a screwdriver. Nothing went bang and the wheel is now tight again!
