je_1972 Posted July 24, 2008 Posted July 24, 2008 Hello all, I LOVE the cruise control. Since I have had my C5 (2002 2.2 hdi sx) the cruise control "slow down" the bottom rear switch on the cruise control stalk has always been a bit sticky. When I pressed it, it would often get stuck in and the car would just carry on slowing down. It always popped back out with a little nudge so I learned to live with it. Recently the CC has completely stopped working. I'm not getting any faults or warnings, so I think it is the switch that is the problem. Does anyone know where I can get a spare? and if this is something a DIY'er could do? Quote

Guest ray kelly Posted July 25, 2008 Posted July 25, 2008 try ur local electrical or discount store fo a tine of switch cleaner. remove stalk from car an get as far into it with the spray as you can use the straw that comes with it before taking the stalk out I'd have a look at the switches hung off clutch & brake.if you pull out the carpet trim in the passenger foot well behind the glove box, look up there (lie on the floor or you'll twist your neck worse than anything) you'll see a huge big steel bar coming from behind the centre console, somewhere close along that you should see two paddles that act on two black press switch boxes, one being held in place with a red plastic ring & the other with a white plastic ring, just make sure that these switches haven't popped out of their mountings. This happened with mine after I got the CC retro fitted, but all was fine once I went under & clipped the switch in properly. It's been perfect now for the last year since. give that a shot as it's less fiddly than meddling with the stalk & there's a (albeit small) chance it could be the problem. ta Ray ... Quote
je_1972 Posted July 25, 2008 Author Posted July 25, 2008 Thanks Coastline & Ray, I'll try these things 1st. But as the switch on the stalk feels loose & sticky I'm sure that my problem is with that part. I'll let you know how I get on. Thanks again for the feedback :-) Quote

Randombloke Posted July 26, 2008 Posted July 26, 2008 But as the switch on the stalk feels loose & sticky I'm sure that my problem is with that part. I'll let you know how I get on. I would get a cotton bud and some neat alcohol and carefully clean around the button. Then do the same again with some silicon lubricant. Quote
je_1972 Posted August 22, 2008 Author Posted August 22, 2008 OK I got tho the bottom of this! I carefully prized the swith covers away from the stalk, underneath there is a silicone membrane in the shape of a kind of cross. At each corner and in the centre there is a tiny black molding of some description which sits inside a kind of silicone bubble, this part sits directly under neath the switch cover and the contacts on the stalk! The one under the CC switch was ruptured, the little black bit came out and was no longer suspended in the "bubble" it has to be one of the most fragile things I have ever seen! This assembly acts as the "spring" and the "contact" in one, yet it obviously could and does wear out it's just thin silicone plastic! To resolve it I swapped the membrane from the audio control stalk to the CC stalk and vice versa, as much prefer the Cruise Control function than the volume increasing function! Hope that helps. Quote
