Guest TaxiBill Posted August 2, 2008 Posted August 2, 2008 Hi everyone I'm new here, just found this site. Wondering if anyone has come across this problem..... I have a Citroen C5 with water leaking from the expansion tank under the cap. I have changed the thermostat, also put in a new cap. When the water boils it leaks about a litre of water per 100 miles, from under the cap. Temperature guage in the car stays normal, but after 100 miles the computer says to top up water coolant level. Any ideas as to what it might be? No other leaks anywhere. (engine is a 2.2 Peugeot, diesel) Thanks for any thoughts! :-) Quote
techbod Posted August 2, 2008 Posted August 2, 2008 it sounds like a water pressure problem ensure the fan cuts in and the air in the car is hot if not then suspect air in the cooling system Quote

Now start engine up and let it run wait until the cooling fan has done 3 cycles (switched on and off ) then open the bleed screw on the top radiator hose a little bit to let any air out once its all water coming out close it. NEVER NEVER OPEN THE MATRIX ONE AS ITL BLOW ALL OVER WHEN HOT Quote

I've been tied up with decorating the last day or so, but i am going to make the checks you've suggested tomorrow. I don't usually post on forums, so i will keep this brief, not used to it...lol....but thanks again and i will report back. Quote
stringman Posted August 8, 2008 Posted August 8, 2008 Hi all I also have a leak in the cooling system.I have regularly been topping up the system and, until I read this great forum, had no clue about bleeding the system.does it sound likely that i have air in the system? also i have looked at the previous post and then looked in my engine bay 2.2 hdi sx auto estatebut cant, for the life of me, fathom out where these bleeding bleed screws are. Can anyone offer me any help or (dare I say Pics) many many thanks in advance Andy Quote
techbod Posted August 8, 2008 Posted August 8, 2008 I cant help there because the C5 is newer than my software but as a guide to bleeding you always look for the highest point in the cooling system and that's not the expansion tank even though it is higher so we are looking at a pressure thing and normally found where the thermostat housing is Quote

Can I confirm a few things pleasethe two black hoses that go through the bulkhead, are they on the left or right of the engine? top or bottom? the radiator hose- is this the top one onthe left hnd side of the rad? it has a large cap wih a cross on it (could be a large bleed screw) sorry for being so thick thanks Quote

Might i suggest you let car stand overnight then open these screws when engine is cold so your a bit familiar with them as when hot its a high pressure system that could scald you badly. Then once your confident with them do it when hot Quote

stringman Posted August 14, 2008 Posted August 14, 2008 thanks for thatI had a look at the engine (before I read your post)I found a blue covered bleed cap to the right of the engine ( had to take the plastic engine cover off to gain access)also found a dust cap thing on a pipe down at the bottom unscrewed that and it wa a valve like a tyre valve. pressed that and then realised that i really should leave it to the experts ( or at least get a manual!!!) thanks andy Quote
